When I saw he was in net for all of those I just assumed the backup goalie was sick or something. Freaking nuts.

Yeah I'm with you, right now I would take Bahl over Mercer, especially with Bahl starting to be a bit more physical.
At the time I would have taken Mercer though.

Y'know what ... I actually still think it tracks to a certain degree, that was their one and only shot to make something out of what they had with Hughes and Pettersson and Miller at the time. I might not call it an A, and the Flames certainly came out on the better end of the deal, but I don't really have a problem with a team firing on all cylinders pushing in some chips.

I've always though a trade should be graded on asset value at the time ... and then a line drawn before development and drafting.
Lindholm for a cap dump with some upside, a solid prospect, a first round pick, and a lesser prospect is a good package and a clear check mark for Conroy.
The fact that the prospect has both progressed well and been a great selection by the Calgary scouting staff is huge. Drafting Gridin with the 1st round pick vs say a player that hasn't popped as much is another huge add.
But the original transaction was a great trade for the Flames without hindsight.

He gave both teams As. Which is pretty accurate for the Flames considering Lindholm was worth maybe a 2nd rounder at best and Conroy got all those pieces.
It was always a F for the Canucks. Did they not watch Lindholm play for the previous year and a half? I guess he was our "allstar" hahaha

The cap dump might have push them over the Oilers. Considering they couldn't score a PP goal in the final 5 games against the Oilers, Kuzmenko might have won the series for them.

I think hindsight is 20/20 here.
At the time Holtz was the younger player with the higher ceiling (in my opinion). A couple years later it's obvious that Bahl is the better piece for us and Holtz never really panned out.
I think we would of been happy with Mercer too though.
Solid work by CC, moving Markstrom with 2 years of term left for Reschny and Bahl.
|
My recollection is that most wanted Mercer, but most did not want Holtz.
Very happy with Bahl.
And it may well turn out that Reschny ends up better than Mercer.

I would have taken a 1st and nothing else for Markstrom.

In that same time, Wolf has a .906 SV% in 86 games and Vladar has a .903 SV% in 55 games between the Flyers and Flames.

Funny thing from the boxscore:
At the other end of the ice, just to rub it in, Ilya Sorokin had a 44 shot shutout.
Yes, the shots were 44-24 in favor of the team that lost 9-0. That in itself has to be some kind of a record.

Yeah, most wanted Mercer, but only Holtz is what was being offered. The bigger problem with the trade at the deadline or before the draft is that their 1st pick was not in play.

1st shot goal definitely affects the team's mentality.

Too bad Tyler Dellow (dgibb10) works for the Hurricanes now so can't comment on the stroke of genius this trade was. Fun trip down memory lane his posts are, though. Getting anything notable for a goalie of Markstrom's age and caliber was outstanding work and borderline theft.
Quick data pull from Natural Stattrick: Of the 32 goalies with the most 5v5 minutes played since the trade, Markstrom ranks 31st in goals saved above expected/60, ahead of only Sam Ersson. Dustin Wolf ranks 15th.
1. Logan Thompson
2. Connor Hellebuyck
3. Darcy Kuemper
15. Dustin Wolf
21. Stuart Skinner
31. Jacob Markstrom
32. Sam Ersson

I think was probably a supply and demand argument why the Flames would get a ton for Markstrom. But the guy was 33 and showing signs of decline when traded. Darcy Kuemper is probably the only starter at that age right now that anyone would now.

I'd gladly take Markstrom back, along with Mercer and a 2nd in exchange for Cooley.
That way we do get Mercer in the Markstrom trade after all.
Edit: and I strongly dislike Markstrom, but getting assets and using him as a backup for 2 years is fine with me.
