Get out of my head! Lol, we're basically building the same rig. That's exactly the case I'm going with. Looks like the mesh side?

I also am not a fan of RGB.

PSU I'm going with Seasonic, glad the 750 will work as I think that's all ME has. I'd rather a little more headroom too so may see what Amazon has.

I bought all my stuff from Memory Express in the NW. You can filter their search results by what's in-stock per store, they have a bunch of 850W and 1000W PSUs if you want more headroom

FYI, Nvidia just released DLSS 4.5 today, if you upgrade your drivers you can enable it for every game under the global settings

https://theprofanedgeek.com/gaming/n...-for-any-game/

Tested it a bit in Cyberpunk and I can see a noticable difference in some fine details, and especially in particle effects like Linus shows in his video. No noticeable performance hit on the 5070ti, but it may hit older gen cards harder

I may try the frame generation again if the quality there has gotten better, I tried it a few times where I was at <60fps on a game but it was too distracting.

I don't have a 5000 series so can't get the extra frames, but I'm assuming whatever quality improvement will also apply to the older models.

DLSS 4.5 is for every card, the new dynamic frame gen coming out later will only be for 50 series cards. And I can't speak to older frame gen quality since this is the first time I've ever been able to try it, but when playing Cyberpunk I can't notice any visual oddities with it on at 2x. Having the FPS dip into the 40's is very noticeable however if I turn it off, so I definitely appreciate having the option

I was trying it in AC Shadows and the frame generation definitely made weird ghosting and shadows around the player when running around but it probably varies wildly by game and scenario. But hoping that even though I don't get the dynamic frames or "even more frames!!" on my 4000 series card that there might still be some improvements to how those frames are generated.

Plus it was very weird having my input feel like 40fps but the screen be at 100+.. fortunately with some tweaking and DLSS I was able to get a good enough frame rate without frame generation.

My machine is full RGB. It was after purchase, that I realized, I too am not a fan of RGB. Lol.

Fortunately, its buried under my desk.

What monitor did you end up with?

I'm still loving my FV43U.

So is mine for the most part. Sits beside my desk on the floor. I can still see the lights on my current rig from the AIO CPU cooler RAM etc....lighting up the wall beside it.

Will be nice to have one that has none of that.

Got my hands on the same case as cam_wmh, last one ME in the SE had. Sadly I missed out on the sale and it cost a bit more but compared to the RAM and SSD, it's a drop in the bucket.

Assembly begins this weekend

Grabbed a Lenovo X1 carbon gen 11 off Marketplace for cheap as a personal laptop since my trusty ol' Razer Blade is basically a desktop replacement at this point (sub 2hr battery life). Enjoying the experience so far and it has all the I/O I need.

I honestly think I want lower spec machines from now on because I'm finding if you get the higher end screen or processor or GPU or whatever you're just costing yourself battery life - my work machine is an XPS 15 with a 4kOLED display, RTX 4060, i7 etc, and I basically never use any of that potential and while the screen is nice for watching things on it just doesn't stay on long enough. Meanwhile the Asus machine I was previously using lasted like 2 years before dying and required a bunch of tinkering in the meantime to keep it working (speakers dying, keys wearing out, bits wearing off or chipping) as did the Gigabyte Aero before it. I am honestly getting to a point where I think the single most important feature of a laptop is build quality, rather than anything inside it. Imagine if the most important part of doing a desktop build was getting a good case; that's basically where it's gotten to.

I have a gigabyte aero and it too is pretty much a desktop. I find myself jealous of my wife's surface fairly often.

What are people doing for PC speakers these days? Turns out I overlooked a little something something....sound.

For damn close to 20 yrs, I've been rocking a set of Logitech 5.1 speakers. These things pound. Unfortunately they have the 3.5mm orange/black/green outputs that my new M/B doesn't have inputs for. Seems they are getting rare these days?

So my options are:
1) Buy a dedicated sound card. I seem to recall this not working out well in the past. Various models had poor sound or had a buzzing noise.
2) Hope I can exchange the M/B for one that has the correct inputs (Build is basically done naturally so have to undo all of that) or bite the bullet and get a new one.
3) Downgrade my speakers and buy some 2.1's. Not wild about this either.

I know headphones are a thing, just don't like em. Maybe I just don't have right ones but I really dislike having them on and I don't find the surround sound is as natural as free standing speakers.

I notice a lot of gamers are using bookshelf speakers but how do you connect those to a PC? Do they need subs?

Ugh...what a mistake to make.

It seems like basically everyone uses HDMI for sound now, or just USB through a DAC. I never felt a need for more than a 2.1 setup and use Logitech G560s in one place and Kanto Yu6s with a sub for my office. Both systems are completely fine and require no thought or effort to set up or use. I've never thought I needed some skookum surround sound system for a computer, though.

I think if you want 5.1 you might want to just go through an amp and a set of passive speakers at whatever price-to-performance level you're after, because everything else will be a compromise.

I use headphones so can't comment on speakers, though I have been looking at small soundbars for the times when I would like a speaker.

Bookshelf speakers depending on the models may be enough to not need a subwoofer, and many models have outputs to add a subwoofer. Connectivity varies, some have bluetooth 5 or USB connectivity so you don't use the sound card in the PC at all (this is true of lots of different speaker options and headphones these days).

For your existing setup depending on the motherboard you should be able to repurpose the jacks to use the 5.1 from the onboard soundcard. For example from the MSI manual:

So in the config for the sound (i.e. install the Realtek Audio Console) you should be able to set that up.

A dedicated sound card is an option, I prefer external ones these days but you may run into a similar issue where it doesn't have enough plugs to support a 5.1 analog audio (mine doesn't). But there does seem to be a bunch of cheap USB ones in Amazon that have that, though I couldn't comment on the quality.

Another option would be to update the speakers with ones that support S/PDIF via TOSLINK (assuming the motherboard has that). Something like https://steelseries.com/gaming-speakers/arena but that is probably the most expensive out of all the options and seems a waste if you like your speakers.

Is that on a gamin rig you use 2.1?

Surround is amazing in games. RDR2 was so much more immersive with 5.1. FPS I've played in the past like BF or CoD were also awesome with surround.

I used to have a set of 5.1 headphones that had multiple different drivers pointed in different directions in each side. This was ages ago, and that was the last time I enjoyed surround sound on my computer. I don't think anything like that exists anymore.

The fake surround is tuned for the average ear and I guess my ear shape is different enough that the fake surround does nothing for me, though I haven't tried in a number of years so maybe I should try again.

Because yeah 5.1 was pretty awesome in games.

So in the your post, that setup seems to need some sort of external receiver? Am I reading that right?

I'm a bit floored here. I just looked through ME's website and basically all there PC speakers these days seem to be 2.1. The only set of 5.1's are like $600 and special order.

I've also looked at a number of different M/B's and they all seem to have the same inputs as my current one has.

I'm really not sure what to do here.

That 5.1 system is the Z906 and I don't think it solves your problem because still expects that you're going to have a sound card. The SteelSeries Arena 9 work with USB, but apparently they kinda suck considering they're pretty expensive.

The market for PC speakers just doesn't care about going beyond 2.1 or desktop / bookshelf speakers, is the reality of the situation. If you want to go beyond that you're probably going to end up down a rabbit hole... this may help.

I have the sad....

I hopped over the the LTT forum and went into their audio section, almost every post is regarding headphones for gaming.

Looks like I'll be trying out a sound card again.
