Seems common sense to the rest of the world that this was a fantastic day for the people of Venezuela.. they got freed from a dictator, sorry you can't wrap your head around the fact that Trump had a positive net impact on something but it's just the truth.

As for the Carney not getting a deal done with the US.. yeah I'm not putting this ALL on him, his padawan Trudeau also couldn't negotiate his way out of a wet paper bag so there's that. Too worried about the environment and too focused on taxing us all to death I guess.

And as for former US president's blocking KXL yeah fair enough, Sleepy Joe was useless. But Trump wanted this done since his first term. Lots of blame to go around. My point stands though.. not getting it built is an ongoing colossal failure for Canada and Alberta.

Also, thank you to those with more knowledge than me on the difference between Alberta's oil and that of Venezuela, I was asking for clarification because I keep hearing mixed answers about whether the refineries in the US are even capable of handling raw Venezuelan crude right out of the gate. Interesting stuff that will become very important to pay attention to going forward..

Can't remember the other points everyone is throwing rocks at me for but yeah I appreciate (most) of the discourse guys. If you haven't already... look up all the videos of Venezuelans celebrating around the world today. This is a good thing, yes things will have to be stabilized to ensure it stays this way but just enjoy the moment if you can, I know I am.
As soon you use words like, "common sense" and "sleepy joe" we know what cult you're in.

Carney shares the optimism for the future of Venezuela with a few people on CP.

I'm glad to see that you've come around on the Liberals and Mark Carney! We need everyone on board to deal with the issues with face with the administration south of the border.

It's fascinating just how poor some people's reading comprehension is. I had assumed most people understood how communication and words work, but every day a few on CP surprise me. To be fair, usually it's the same few.

I like a few things Carney has done for sure. But dealing with issues south of our boarder isn’t one of them.

Spoiler!

How quickly people forget. Or perhaps are too young to remember.

And like most things with Trump, it seems like celebrations were probably a bit premature. The administration seems to be signalling that they don't care who is in power or about any kind of democratic reforms as long as the Venezuelan government gives the US what they want.
As someone commented on another platform. Most of these expats are feeling great that they can once again go visit their families and have a nice vacation spot to go back to.

They aren't going back to Venezuela anytime soon.

What history book would you recommend on the history of Venzuela?

Crude Nation and Things Are Never So Bad They Can’t Get Worse cover Venezuela specifically, but a broader understanding of regime changes through force (specifically by the US) is more enlightening in this scenario, so something like Catastrophic Success or Losing the Long Game would be good reads.

Basically, even if things turn out well in the short term, the long term fortunes of these countries are rarely good or rarely even just better than had their been no intervention.

I normally don't get this pedantic, but because it is you: I wouldn't call anything that wasn't peer reviewed a history book, especially if it was written by political correspondents. These are primary sources at best.

They're also hoping that their families are self-sufficient and they can make things work on their own.

How can anyone deal with that Neanderthal orange rapist?

I guess bend over for him like Pierre Polyester would have done?

I don't think there will be a near- or medium-term flood of Venezuelan crude coming online. Simply based on economics. Chevron and Exxon have much better opportunities to deploy the capital in the Permian and Guyana. Unless of course the US government wants to heavily subsidize the investment. But even then it doesn't make sense. The world doesn't need this incremental barrel right now.

I see this as more of a long term play to backfill a declining Permian in the 2030s. More of a long term energy security grab.

May I suggest historian Heather Cox Richardson?

Trumpers accuse her of being biased, but that’s on them.

She explains things pretty basically; sometimes that can be annoying but ya a good thing so the knowledge can be accessible to all.

In addition to the Venezuela issue she’s also got good discussions about Curtis Yarvin, the tech bros, Christofascists, Seven Mountains Mandate.

Also has blog, Substack, etc.

My big question is, what is their agenda here other than imperial control over Venezuela and its oil? It sure ain't about drugs, especially since they haven't produced any evidence to support that narrative.

At least with the WMD bull#### in Iraq, they showed pictures and other stuff to justify the invasion to congress. None of that check on power is happening here.

This. Is. Illegal.
The problem is they are slowly learning. The WMD blew up in their face (haha, not really funny) so they learned, don't ask for permission. Don't give a ####e about forgiveness. Do what you want. This will continue to be effective until Congress decides enough illegality is enough. Even then...

I was thinking this this morning. However, unless you are able to suddenly say, we now have nukes, leave us alone, the US would never allow us to develop the infrastructure to develop and launch said weapons. No way they allow nukes so close to New York, Boston, Chicago, Washington, etc. We would be Peurto Rico before you could say... anything.
