- the requirement for an OOP inspection on a vehicle we've just purchased prior to registration -- only to find that it needs a bunch of stuff done on it. Is there a good way of mitigating this? Send a copy of an OOP inspection sheet as part of the pre-purchase inspection process?
- taxes -- if you're buying exclusively for registration and use in Alberta, is it possible to avoid paying the provincial sales tax on it?
- logistics -- How expensive is it to ship a vehicle from the Lower Mainland, or would we be better off just driving the thing?

It would be great if we could find what we were looking for in Alberta, but to no avail.
The dealer won't charge PST if the delivery address is oop. You will have to pay in your home province on registration if applicable.
I had a car brought from Van to MJ for $1300. the guy happened to be coming back empty and I caught him at the right time. On an autotransport you should be able to get it home for about $1500. I'm assuming destination Calgary. Dealers should have some connections for that.
As for the inspection that's a gamble. I would also run the VIN through your provincial system and ICS to make sure it's got clear title. A Car-fax is always nice too.

You're definitely better off driving the thing but it depends if the weather cooperates and if you have snow tires.

I believe you can get an out of province inspection done in BC and they will accept that in AB within a certain time period so you won't be surprised.

Does anyone have a vehicle, in particular a VW, with a heated windshield? I have a couple sections where the heating elements are not working and I'm wondering if this can be fixed relatively easily. The main section not working is from the left edge and extends about 12 inches or so where none of the elements turn on. On the passenger side there are two or three individual heating wires that are not working.

Once the heated wire matrix in the glass is disturbed (rock chips and cracks), you're done, and the only way you're fixing it is by replacing the windshield. Assuming this is not a new windshield, of course. I have to get mine swapped out in the spring once the pea gravel is cleared off the road.

Well that's good to know, and it looks like a BC provincial inspection will work for the Alberta OOP within 90 days.

I brought a car the other way, from Calgary to Vancouver. Hardest part was figuring out how to insure the car for the drive home and re-register it in BC. I had a lot of conflicting information and the dealer wasn't much help, fortunately I found the right insurance agent who knew her business.

Nice thing about your situation is you get to remove the front plate once you're home, as opposed to having to add it to an Alberta car with no bracket!

Thanks gents. The I-Pace we were looking at ended up getting sold to a wholesaler so it's off the table. We're keeping our eyes open for other options.

Moot now but in the future, you were going to drive it, if you had a current active AB reg, you have 14 days from purchase date and can use that old plate. Obviously contact insurance to have that in place and have to have bill of sale on you too. Thanks to the guy at AMA for that one.

Did it a couple months back when picked up a CPO A6 AllRoad from the Audi dealer in Regina. Used the plate from my previous Audi and got the OOP done here a a week or so later.

Picked up the girlfriend's new 'cat' last night; we are now a 100% British car household. Apologies for no interior shots, it was a bit dark by the time we took delivery.

2020 Jaguar I-Pace HSE, gallium silver with charcoal leather. Stunningly gorgeous and a wonderful car to drive, and I say that as someone who loves his combustion engines. We added a four-year extended warranty that covers all the high-voltage stuff.

It's an absolute travesty that Jaguar couldn't figure out how to sell more of these instead of rebooting the entire brand and killing off the lineup.

Looks like it could go fast if you want it too...

I was curious where it was actually built. In Austria by Magna Steyr, which is owned by Magna International. So technically it's got some Canadian content in there.

Yep, just shy of 400 horsepower which is more than double that of the vehicle it replaced. Interestingly, Magna Steyr has done a few interesting contract jobs for auto manufacturers; they also built the first generation Aston Martin Rapide. The later "Rapide S" was brought in-house and produced at the normal assembly line at the Gaydon factory.

Neat car! Was curious so looked at AutoTrader and the price for something like that seems really good for what it is, though good call on the extra warranty.

RIP to the man that came up with the fuel gauge arrow idea. Kind of surprising actually that it took until 1986 for someone in the automobile industry to bring this to attention.

It looks like I will have to buy my first vehicle in 20 years.

I have been lucky for the most part. bought a vehicle when i turned 16 and drove it for 10 years; took a hand-me-done for a couple years; and have been mooching off my wife for the last 6-7 years.

We both used to walk to work, so one car was typically fine. But now, i have to drive to work (only about 10 minutes) and about 1-2 days a week she does too. So it has become a pain. Plus, i am truly sick of the excuse of it being her car when she back-seat drives it.

I truly don't want to spend a ton of money. Im going to test drive a subaru crosstrek this weekend then run over to Lexus to test an UX and NX for the likely top end of my arbitrary budget.

any other suggestions or tips would be appreciated.

Im looking at a small SUV/Crossover. We currently have a hatchback and i love driving it in the city, but my wife wants something a bit bigger.

I don't want a RAV4

Or...ya know...they could all just get their poop in a group and put the fuel filler on the same side.

I guess. And you figure the Germans or Japanese would’ve done so. That said my parents late 70s cars filled by pulling down the rear license plate in the center of the car, so no arrow would’ve helped there.

Back in the day it was/is mostly European produced/designed cars with right hand fuel doors; moving the steering wheel to the left was the limit to the engineering sacrifices that they made for the North American market.
