The double pedestrian fatality
Reading the report in the papers today. It was estimated by some the car was travelling at a very high rate of speed, and sped away from the scene even faster. The car was found ditched a few blocks away where is then discovered that it had been reported stolen a few days earlier. I can't help but think this may have been an intentional incident...

I've been thinking about this the past couple days. It is getting to be a crappier place to live I think. And what do I hear when I turn on the radio this morning? All of 4th ave shut down from 1st to 10th because of a drive by fatality and general carnage. Unbelievable.

I'm looking at exit strategies right now, The Calgary that I live in is not the Calgary that I grew up in. I don't know if its the population crush, or the immirgration from other parts of Canada with different values, but to me this city has become dirtier, more violent, and more filled with complete and utter jerk hats.

Oh, and add this to the pile as well..
The Calgary Police Service is investigating a suspicious
death in the Ramsey area. At about 0500 hours the Calgary
Police Service received a call that a female appeared to be
deceased in the intersection of Burns Avenue and Alexander
Street SE.

What a wonderful thread.
I agree though
Seems a lot of death recently.
Add in the Bow river fatalities 16yr old kid falling in, and the rafters in the weir.
August long weekend is always bad on the highways too. Accidents should start this afternoon and Monday. So be ready for more...

And Calgary continues it's descent into big-city problems.
While i agree with CaptainCrunch in looking for other places to live (I'm looking to get out too), for those that want to stay, just be more street-weary and keep to yourselves in sketchy places and around sketchy people.
IMO, there seems to be alot more transients passing through here, simply using Calgary as a stop to waste time in, or do some shady dealings. It's defintely not the Calgary we grew up in, I'm quite saddened by this fact.

I saw on the news the CPS saying they can't hire enough officers. They expect they are about 120 behind where they want to be - they just can't attract enough.

Entrance standards are quite high. I know a few people that wanted to be (and would make) great police officers, but they just aren't physically big or strong enough o handle the rigors of the job. However, if this continues to be a problem, the CPS might want to revise it's hiring policies.

At approximately 3 a.m. on Sunday, August 5, 2007, police
responded to a report of shots fired in the 300 block of 10
Street N.W.
Police have recovered several shell casings in the area.
and
At approximately 2:10 a.m. on Sunday, August 5, 2007, police
responded to a report of an altercation and a shot fired in
the 200 block of 9 Avenue S.E.
It is unknown at this time if anyone was injured.
Unreal.

or demand more money to attract police from outside so the quality of officer isn't dilluted by more relaxed admission standards.

�� Credit card offences increased by 25% which may be partially related to a
growing problem with credit card skimming in Calgary and Nationally.
Other Trends
�� The number of drug offences has increased by 30% since 2001.
�� The total number of crack cocaine incidents has more than doubled (+113%)
since 2001.
�� The number of domestic related calls for service increased by 4% from 2004.
�� The number of victims injured by weapons increased by 3% in 2005.
Youth Crime Trends
�� The total number of youth crime offences was similar to 2004.
�� The number of youth formally charged with offences increased by 11% while
the number of youth dealt with via other measures decreased by 12%.
�� Youth violent crime was stable in 2005.
�� Youth are most likely to be involved in property offences

Wow, it was gunshots! I live a few blocks from there (10th Street and 5th Ave NW), and my wife and I heard a commotion (not uncommon for that time of night on a weekend, with people coming out of the various pubs and bars on 10th Street and Kensington Road) and what we thought were firecrackers being set off last night. It didn't sound like gunshots to us, but I guess we were wrong.

You cannot become a big city without having the big city problems. I too am saddened by this trend, I am still planning to move back to Cowtown, but it won't be for a few years yet. What kind of city will it be then?

That's what it comes down to. Just from "anecdotal evidence" and from talking to some that work in the field I think Drugs are becoming a much bigger problem in this city than they were in the past. And it seems there is no strategy to deal with it.

Makes sense. The vast amount of drugs coming through vancouver can't possibly be consumed by the local market. A city awash in cash and transplanted labour seem to be perfect conditions to create a new crop of users.
