As I’ve theorized, McDavid isn’t going to see the end of that new deal in Edmonton but that is part of this plan. And the Oilers are fully aware of that possibility.

Him taking the extension at such a cheap amount makes him fittable under a team’s cap. He gives the teams around he’s targeting a couple seasons to be able to fit him in.

Meanwhile he sells hope in Edmonton but even he knows three runs to the Cup are unlikely. The GAS level is probably declining slowly, as evidenced last night, in Edmonton as he looks to his next team.

And now, with the seeming implosion of the Leafs it’s working out perfectly for McDavids long term plan. Maybe McDavid doesn’t get until summer 2027 before they move him, maybe it’s in 6 months as the Leafs clean house and acquire McDavid.

Didn’t listen to the full After Hours but saw him talking about his best Christmas presents. Talked about a #97 McDavid leafs jersey

Yup that contract was designed to make it easier for McDavid to get out of town, not keep him in Edmonton. Its a lower cap hit which increases his trade value, and he can dictate where he's traded, its shot term built for McDavid's benefit so he can chase a cup or a max contract elsewhere in 3 seasons.

But make no mistake this is an asset trading contract, and Leon probably got lied to when he signed his long term deal.

Oilers will re-sign Kassian again so that he can teach the Flames a lesson in “the Code”.

You missed the best part!

He’s making extra money from Instagram!

He has to do this. The guy is barely making ends meet. Between supporting a bar, a retail business, and an interior design company, and leaving $6/7 million (yay!) on the table, how can he possibly make ends meet.

It’s not like he can garnishee “difference makers” Frederic and Tomasek.

One of the most beige “influencers”.

Wonder if there is a way to track that Instagram revenue and see if it is tied to the Oilers secret foundation

Kinda dumb to get traded instead of just signing somewhere. Any team he goes to will be gutted. His stats will nosedive as well if he stops getting spoon fed 26mins a night. He's better off riding it out in Edmonton and then signing for max.

He wants to win a cup though. He probably knows it’s not going to happen in Edmonton. I think the 2 year deal was just a favour to them as they have done a lot of things for him. Only 2 years though so if his suspicions held true he could bail.

Problem he’s going to probably face is that if he goes to a contender they are probably going to be close to the cap already. He’ll have to take a less than market value deal or they are going to have to dump a bunch of good players to make it work. Essentially becoming the Oilers. The good players might end up going to the Oilers increasing their depth and most likely making them a better team.

He’s backed himself into a corner. Quite the catch 22.

Decent hit but Bahl still let up a bit. Should have absolutely plowed that clodpate.

It's so easy to send their whole team into a spiral yet everybody's too shy to do the deed.

Frost had a better opportunity in the neutral zone to smoke McDummy with his head down. But he just swung at the puck with his stick.

First order of business for any team trading for Mcdud is to cut his ice time 4 or 5 minutes a night. No one can play 26 minutes a night without floating through 10 of them. I expect, given any other team will have better talent than the Oilers, he'll score more elsewhere and be less of a floating liability due to reduced ice time.
Or maybe he's already too far past his prime. He turns 29 in a couple weeks.

All that to say, Edmonton is no good.

I was actually surprised they didn't call him for a penalty on it considering they have called a lot less a penalty when it is on McDavid.

That's the biggest reason why I think teams don't play aggressively against the Oilers often enough.
