Wonder what happened to him? The batting line against him last year was gross. like a .970OPS (for reference Vladdy was .848 on the year)

Ken Rosenthal has an article posted last night at the Athletic mentioning Blue Jay's interest in Alex Bregman. https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/690...fseason-notes/
Quote:
Team officials have been in recent contact with Bregman’s agent, Scott Boras, according to sources briefed on the conversations. Ideally, the Jays want to add a left-handed hitter, but either the right-handed Bregman or Bichette would fit their defensive alignment better than Tucker or Cody Bellinger, both of whom bat left.
Bregman almost certainly would stay at third for the Jays, who then would play Ernie Clement at second and Addison Barger in right, with George Springer and Anthony Santander also manning the outfield and serving as DHs. If the Jays signed Bichette to play second, a position he filled for the first time in the World Series, the only difference is that Clement would remain at third.
|
Quote:
A separator for Bregman is that teams value him not only for his offense and defense, but also his leadership. Like Kyle Schwarber, who re-signed with the Philadelphia Phillies for five years, $150 million, Bregman is viewed as a player who helps make teammates better, a difference-maker on and off the field.
Adding to the possible fit with Toronto: Two of Bregman’s former Houston Astros teammates, Springer and outfielder Myles Straw, are among the leading voices in the Jays’ clubhouse, which already is one of the game’s most cohesive.

Sure feels like yet another guy who is not getting what he wants from the Dodgers so has been using the Jays and time to leverage a better offer from his preferred destination. Just seems like if wanted to sign with the jays he'd have done it already. They are rumored to have the biggest offer on the table, but who knows with these rumors I guess.

At this stage I really hope they don’t have to go to Bregman. I’m a fan but not of his age. Which is why I want Bo pretty badly. Signing older guys is a ticking time bomb. Too many of them and surely things go wrong.

It's annoying how long MLB free agency drags out. Starting to get to the point where we likely won't hear anything until after the holidays. At which time there will only be 6 weeks until pitchers and catchers report. You'd think these guys would want to know where they're going to be playing next season so they can start to prep.

Bregman is a little older but hes still a plus defender at 3B and an above average bat.
Puts Barger as more a full time time outfielder, where he probably improves with more consistent reps and can really use that cannon of his.
I still think Bo comes back in the end, unless the Jays don't think he's going to age well and won't match his best offer he gets out on the market.
It really seems like the Jays are willing to pay the price for 2/3 of Tucker/Bo/Bregman and that would be incredible.

2 of 3 is wishful thinking.
I think there is 50% chance they get one of the three and 50% chance they get none.

I'd still be surprised if the Jays sign 2 of the 3. I think it's more likely to me that Tucker is Priority 1 and then Bo/Bregman are plans B and C. Wouldn't surprise me if Bo is plan C in that equation.

This is normal free agency, not like NHL where the owners blow their brains out in a cap world no less.

Oh, MLB owners blow their brains out just the same as the NHL owners. Just... after thinking about it first.

It seems to me in the NHL, free agents know where they are going to sign well before free agency starts, whereas in baseball, free agency really does not start until the actual date. Players actually start shopping themselves and looking then.
My biggest gripe with the NHL is how they just look the other way on what is clear tampering. The amount of money involved alone tells you that these July 1st signings had to have been discussed weeks if not more in advance. Unless NHL contracts are that boiler plate, I suppose. Still, if free agency truly starts at 12:00pm on July 1, yet guys sign at 12:01 or even any time that day. Just doesn't seem right.
I agree MLB drags on, but at least you get the feeling the player's aren't pre-destined to a team (outside of the Dodgers of course).

I wonder if baseball is the way it is because of Scott Boras. He has so many clients that he can really shape the entire free agent market as teams wait for shoes to drop.

That'll be interesting to see going forward. A lot of his guys have been taking 1 year or short deals lately when they don't get their number. But if they end up with lower total earnings (trying to sign long term a year older) they'll be pissed and if his strategies no longer maximize he'll lose clients.
