I've been loving the Flip 2 but the hinge is starting to crack, right in the same spot that a lot of other people have been reporting about. They'll exchange it, thankfully, but I can't really recommend anyone get one until we can confirm that they've fixed the design flaw.

Also, AYN has announced a new dual-screen handheld that rivals the price on the low end. The higher specced version looks really good and would be a great machine for 3DS games.

What's everyone's opinion on the Anbernic handheld consoles?

Are they the best currently available or should I look at another brand?

Not sure what your budget is, but the Retroid Pocket 6 is due to come out in January. Those have generally been the best all-in-one emulation devices before the jump up to something like a Steam Deck. I'm planning to pick one up sometime in the new year

I haven't looked into them yet, I like what I see.

Do you have a Retroid Rocket 5 right now? Do you want to sell it to me so you can buy the new version in Jan? : )

Anbernic's best features are their price and variety. I've had a couple cheap ones that were great for the money, but some people swear by other brands like Miyoo and TrimUI. I think their higher-end Android devices are more competitive but they don't have anything I'm looking for, yet.

I have the Retroid Flip2. I had the Pocket 5 but gave it to my brother. They're both really great handhelds. My original Flip2 had a bad hinge, which was common, but they replaced it with a new one that shouldn't have that problem.

If I replaced it I would get the AYN Thor since I've been playing a lot of 3DS games. It's been getting great reviews. If you don't need two screens the RP6 would be a great choice around that price point.

If you have one of the more powerful handhelds you can use Gamehub (I use the third-party lite version to avoid tracking) or Winlator to emulate Windows games. I prefer Gamehub because it has steam integration for cloud saves. Both can be a pain to set up but emuready has a list of settings that work best based on the game and hardware.

I just discovered the Anbernic systems, and I was wondering if anyone has any advice on operating systems? I'm just wondering if I can make the stock system better looking and more functional.

Which device are you looking at? I have Knulli on mine that run Linux. GarlicOS and MinUI are good as well.

Retro Game Corps has guides for setting them up that are very thorough.

I have the RG34XXSP, the one that looks like the flip GBA. Is Knulli one you would recommend? I'm deciding between that or Onion. I guess I could always just do it, and give it a try.

Good to know Retro Game Corps should work.

Yeah I would definitely recommend Knulli. The good thing is you can easily try them both out since the OS stays on the microSD card, and you can just reflash the card to go back to whichever one you like best.

I got lucky and got my Retroid Pocket 6 delivered exactly one week before we're set to leave for Vietnam, this should make the layovers a little easier to deal with. So far I'm very impressed, the screen is fantastic, controls are some of the best I've seen in a handheld, and the size is perfect. I was debating heavily between this and a Steam Deck, but for this being half the price and able to fit in a pocket makes me very glad I went with Retroid instead. And thanks to GameNative, an open source Windows game emulator, I can play a ton of the indie games I have on Steam with it, so it's like a Steam Deck mini

One tip I would have for anyone interested in a RP6, buy the silicon grip that they sell for it. It's only $10 extra and it makes it so much more comfortable to hold for longer play sessions. Also ditch the Retroid launcher that it comes with and use Daijisho instead, it's a great frontend for your game library will still being a fully functional Android launcher

I'm a fan of GameNative. It works with a lot more games than GameHub or Winlator.

I use the ES-DE launcher on everything but I've heard good things about Daijisho too. Cocoon is getting a lot of praise as well.

I'm glad you like the RP6. I'm happy with my Flip2 and I'm still waiting to get a Thor. I'm hoping prices don't go up again before the next preorder ships.

I'm a big fan of ES-DE for Linux setups, but for Android I want something that can also function as a normal launcher, and ES is very clunky with Android apps (plus no touchscreen)

One more thing for any Retroid Pocket 5 or 6 owners, I highly recommend doing this tweak for better audio through the built-in speakers. Made a huge difference on my RP6

Retroid is discontinuing the 12GB RP6 and raising the price on the 8GB model.

In other bad news, Myrient is shutting down due to increased costs. If you don't know what it is, Myrient is a huge archive of ROMs for old consoles. It had everything with great speed. Unfortunately too many people were taking advantage of it, using paid downloaders to rip entire collections.

Wow, really glad I got mine when I did. The 8GB version is now the same price as what I paid for the 12GB one
