SF proper (which is a tiny area) is a dump. The area around it is nice. SJ is nice. LA the city is huge, it has lots of nice areas. But that's not really relevant, one could live in the city of Santa Monica for instance.

Just not what I've heard this season so far, I wanted to share my follow up.

The California nix is the weird one to me, why not the Kings but yes to Sharks?
Seems odd, but things happen/change.
I saw a couple comments on here so wanted to follow up. My post yesterday said the Sharks are interested and have an offer and would only be interested in a sign and trade as they do not want a rental. I know that there was dialogue but do not know how far the dialogue got/has gotten. I'm unaware if Andersson was approached already or if the offer is not what they are looking for. I wasn't given that info. I was told there is an offer out there and a conversation was had about an interest in a sign and trade. Sharks are throwing out feelers to see if there is something there.

My source is someone directly on the payroll in the Sharks organization. They are batting 1000 so far from past information so I trust them fully.

In terms of the Sharks, Ferraro and Liljegren are expected to be moved at the deadline. San Jose is also pleasantly surprised how the team has been playing and how the younger players have adapted. They would like to add a couple vets surrounding the young talent but not as rentals. Defense is the priority hence the interest in Andersson. There are 1-2 other names on defense they are after as well.

Anyways, thought I'd share.

Also I've lived in San Jose for 16 years now (after previously living in Calgary, Edmonton and Fort McMurray growing up) and the area is amazing. I can see why players would want to play here.

The Kings are kind of in a rough spot going forward. Most of their key guys are pretty old. The team isn't good enough to compete either.

LA itself has become a bit of an unpopular living destination for many people. It's full of crime, and the poverty rate continues to grow dramatically. The infrastructure there is a mess. It's a sprawling city without any reliable way to get around. There's been a continued flight out of LA among white, black and Hispanic people (the Asian population is rising).

SJ is in the SF area. If you have lots of money, it's a great place to live. The major issue in Northern California is the cost of housing. Doesn't really apply to a person making many millions a year.

Man... if we could deal with San Jose for Andersson, that would be terrific. Many assets to discuss, makes a ton of sense on paper. The key is if Rasmus likes that destination I suppose. Regardless, so, so, so much more interesting than Toronto and 'Two Scoops' Treliving.

I know for 100% certainty that part of his nix of the L.A trade was family life/safety and schooling.

I'll be honest, I'm not familiar with the different California cities and the various safety levels, so I appreciate those details.

If I were looking at California teams to sign with based on trajectory both the Sharks and Ducks are appealing and the Kings are likely going to be stuck on the treadmill until they fizzle out in a couple of years

Obviously I'm not including other places like Sacramento. I also would not live there.
100% agree.

I really don't like LA but I love San Diego. I have friends that have lived in San Diego, San Francisco/San Jose, and LA. And they love San Francisco/San Jose, liked San Diego, but hated LA. So there are differences for sure.

If I was making a 10 team NTC based on either just teams I've hated more because of the teams they are, or because of the location they are in, I'd have.

Edmonton
Vancouver
Buffalo
Winnipeg
Utah
LA
Detroit
Washington
Columbus
Pittsburgh (this team will be no good once 87 is gone)

I was reading an article in The Hockey News just in the past couple of years that mentioned after the Canadian teams, the next 2 regions that appear on the most no-trade lists are the California and NY area teams. I guess I am far less suprised by that than many others. I think I would have all the NY and Cali teams on a personal no trade list as well.
I think the young single guys probably like those spots a whole lot more than guys with families would. To each their own.

California has the worst taxes in the US if I am not mistaken? I think it is absolutely true that no tax states are typically at the top of players wishlists for the biggest take home pay they can get

LA and SJ are completely different. LA population wise is huge and naturally as a result there is a lot more crime. SF is which is about 45 minutes away from SJ has a large homeless population and crime has risen. SJ IMO (trying to be unbiased as I've lived here for 16 years) is great because it's not too big and was ranked the safest big city (over 1 M people) in the US a few years running a few years back.

LA though has advantages especially for people in their 30's-40's as their are a ton more places to go out and have nice meals/drinks and places are open till 12-2 rather than closing around 10-11 in SJ. My wife grew up in LA so we go back once a month and leave our 2 young sons with the grandparents and go on date nights.

Off topic: The issue with the area is housing costs and interest rates have shot up. We're lucky when we bought our home here in 2021 was when interest rates were in the 2's and now they are in the 6's and 7's. What we paid in terms of price in 2021 in SJ would probably get a 6000-7000 + square foot home in Texas, Ohio (I picked those 2 because we have friends in these states and that's what they bought size wise) etc. But the quality of life, weather and location is what you pay for as well.

No offense but these types of proposals make my left eye twitch.

When is the last time somebody packaged multiple valuable pieces for a prospect with 7 NHL games played?

When is the last time a prospect that was picked in the top 5 was then traded within a year of being drafted?

Housing costs are probably a non-issue. The player buys the house, plays there, and then when he's done, sells the house and moves wherever he wants. And probably makes money on it.

Oh I wasn't saying for players, it is a non issue. I was saying for the general population.

Haha so fair. Just trying to make something that could MAYBE get a conversation started. But I'm sure Misa starts with Parekh/Wolf anyways

From a fan perspective alone, if I were choosing a new team and had no ties or allegiances to anyone, it'd be one of these two teams that I'd choose.

From a place to live standpoint, tiebreaker goes to San Jose for the reasons outlined in this thread. Anaheim is basically in LA so it knocks it down a peg.

If I'm Ras, San Jose would be high on my list of places to play. Live in obscurity, good to great hockey market, tons of potential to win cups with a top 3 young talent in the league in Celebrini along with a tantalizing prospect cupboard. Free agents will be flocking to SJ as of next offseason.
