Spiders
I hate spiders. Does anybody know if they have hearing and if they can go deaf? I sure hope so.
No, this isn't another story about arachnaphobia, rather a story about the annoyances of spiders.
At roughly 6:00am this morning, an hour before my alarm is set to go off, the smoke detector begins to beep, but stops after less than 5 seconds. up I go to check it out. My house is pretty open and I didn't see any smoke so I decided to investigate the house. No smoke or fires to be found anywhere. I was still groggy and I went back to bed. I probably had been in bed for 30 seconds and the smoke detector starts beeping again for less than 5 seconds. Now I'm worried.
I pull it down from the ceiling (dang I'm tall I didn't even need a step stool). I start to look at the device and read the instructions on it. Nope, it isn't a low battery. Its like an alarm but it just stops... is it malfunctioning? Is there a C02 leak and the ceiling fan is wafting traces of it towards the detector? I carry the device with me down the hall and the moment I step back into the bedroom it goes off again. This time I stopped it after about 7 seconds by pressing "hush". What is going on? Is this thing malfuncioning or should I call the fire department?
I went downstairs and grabbed the other detector and I walked around the house with both devices. Nothing happened. Then as I set the downstairs device on the table, the "malfunctioning" device goes off again, but stops immediately. Ok, something weird is happening. I took out the batteries and I tested them, and as I was putting the batteries back in I saw it. I saw what was causing the thing to go off. A fataing shinguardy little spider was in the smoke detector. I was also suspecting this as it happened in my parents house about 20 years ago.
That little sucker got away too. The alarm didn't go off again for the next hour and a half and then I left for work. So obviously it was the spider.
I hate spiders.

LOL. Actually, spiders do sort of "hear"... but they "hear" with the hair on their legs by sensing vibrations... So I'm guessing they wouldn't be able to hear the high-pitched noise of your smoke detector.
Spiders are actually good in the sense that they rid your house of other pests by catching them and eating them for you. But yeah, I'm not crazy about them either.

That spider may not have hearing, but he obviously has a good sense of humor
If he's triggering your alarm though, he's probably not long for this earth as he is irradiating himself quite nicely. Get him to bite you....

Nice to see I'm not alone. I know spiders are good for the house, for the world, etc, etc, but I hate them. Someone that used to be a friend of mine loved spiders. He had several tarantulas, all manner of house hold spiders that he caught and kept, and a friggin' black widow. The guy kept a black widow as a pet! He would take the tarantulas out and let them crawl all over him. I wanted to set them all ablaze. *Shudder* I hate spiders.

I'm not scared of spiders. I hate them because they set of my smoke detector and cause me to wake up waaaaaaaaaaaay before my clock alarm is set to awaken me.

My wife and I spend a large portion of our summers up in the 780 area code, specifically Wabamun Lake. Last year, they had a whole whack of big-ol' spiders up there........Wolf spiders, I think they were. I'm not sure. On the way home, I was passing a semi and decided to flip down the sun visor. The biggest, ugliest spider I had ever seen was languishing on the visor. I started to scream - well, to be honest, squeal - in a pitch higher and louder than Buff's smoke detector. The kids woke up as I veered between the semi and the ditch. My wife frantically tried to squash the spider, but it got away. I spent the rest of our journey in a sweat, sure the spider was going to pounce at any time.
My wife did the big detail job on the car the next day. I just couldn't.

We sometimes get spiders in our work vehicles, and today we were driving along, and I felt something on my arm. I looked down, and saw something large and white, and instantly freaked out.
Little did I know it was only one of those little fluff balls that fly through the air.

Oh my God, that is utterly gross. How big is a Wolf spider? I have never heard of them. I would have got in an accident for sure, thank goodness nothing serious happened.
My 13 yo is morbidly afraid of them, someone posted a picture earlier, in another thread, of a gigantic spider being held by soldier, he freaked out.

Was this your spider? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wolf_Spider
I would have literally crapped my pants if that happened to me.

I think spiders are pretty cool. I saw this one feasting on a dragonfly outside my back door. I couldn't resist. You can see his fangs chowing down and his 6 eyes looking back at me.

Man do I hate spiders. Every time I see one in my room, I dont go to sleep unitill it's dead. I think those jumping spiders from when I was younger turned my off from the species all together.
