Default Ridiculous Statement by American Congressman

Hey, I don't care if you support the Dems or the Republicans, but this statement made by Colorado Republican congressman Tom Tancredo is absolutely ludicrous. I thought I'd post it and see what other people think.

http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/

BOMB MUSLIM HOLY SITES like Mecca and Medina? Gee Tom, that's really going to prevent future attacks against the US. If anything, that would provide even more reason for worldwide jihad, and could instantly turn a whole whack of Islamic moderates that would otherwise work with the West against us and our governments. It would almost certainly piss off alot of non-Muslims too, as that's pretty much pulling the cats tail with a swift yank to get him to shut up.

I can't believe people can get away with saying stuff like this, especially in the middle of a presidential campaign....

Normal international strategy would dictate that this is a good strategy. You hit us, we'll hit back where we know it hurts... however, this is not a normal situation, and therefore normal policy and strategy has to be tossed out the window. They are not dealing with normal, accountable state players that have responsibilities to protect their territory as in normal international relations. All this would accomplish is escalate an already fragile situation into something with no forseeable end.

I think Tancredo watched Swordfish one too many times for his own good.

Considering the attack on the US were largely fuelled by religion, I don't really see this plan as doing anything except encouraging more attacks and anti US sentiment.

Even Presidential candidates are allowed their opinions....as warped as they may be. Can't stifle freedom of speech righst just because the dude wants to be head dog.

Better he says it now so the masses understand what he may do if he was to get into office. This helps them be informed, and that's not a bad thing.

I was just thinking that - although I 100% agree with the ending of that movie.

I would agree with him if another 9-11 happened again. If it doesnt, then what the hell would be the point.

No one here said the guy didn't have the right to say these things, they just pointed out that they disagree... I'm not sure how this is a freedom of speech issue.

I certainly don't see him saying that these comments should never be allowed to be made in public. That's reading a bit into it imo.

What a knob...the small percentage of radicals who are fuelling this jihad would like nothing more than to provoke a widening of the conflict and this policy would do just that...it would not act as a deterrant but rather as an incentive for radicals to attempt further attacks IMO...let's hope that arseholes like this never get a seat at the table for directing US foreign policy...

I have to agree with Ozy, statements like this run opposite to US interests and should be discouraged by the government...loose lips sink ships

Transplant, I fully support free speech and his right to say it; hell, if he wants to go ruin his presidential chances by saying stuff like this, then so be it. I guess my point was that, for a guy who wants to lead the country, his advisors would recommended against leaning even THAT far right in his political agenda.

Sorry if it sounded ambiguous, he can certainly say it if he wants! His funeral, though.

that is an infuriating statement, People have pilgrimages at Mecca, you go there to cleanse your soul, People all around the world go there to find peace. why kill Muslims who have not hurt anyone??? this is not a war against 1 billion muslims, It is a war against terror... and what he wants done is in itself terrorism.Killing of millions of innocents.

This is a Muslim war against infidels. I realise that the vast majority of that religious sect hasn't bought into the program. I also realise that the fundamentalists do number in the millions and have many silent supporters within the Muslim world who today won't act but, might if the right set of circumstances inspired them might become proactive. Because of this blowing up Mecca would be foolishness.

I do think that places of worship and the schools that teach hatred should be destroyed along with their instructors. I don't believe that a temple or a church should be considered a place of refuge.

you have a very negative perspective, I went to Islamic school for 7 years and I was never taught to hate or to act in a way that would be vengeful or hurtful to anyone. In fact i was taught patience, kindness and tolreance. My instructors never degraded any other religions but would often go and learn as much as he could about them, and let us know. they told us to learn as much as we can and to be honest with ourselves not once did he condone anger, or villanization of any other persons. Just letting you know, not all sterotypes are true. I admit currently I do not follow any religion as I believe they are all too simmilar to pick one over the other. they all preach the same thing when it comes down to it.

Those are your instructors...and the school YOU went too. But there are places that teach hatred towards the west....and these places exist even here in North America.
