The Hamonic one he always paid too much to fill the role of defensive dman, especially for a guy coming off a couple poor season.

The Neal signing never made long term sense when you knew you didn't have Tkachuk locked up yet, and you used all your cap on Neal which is what made the Tkachuk bridge the more likely option.

As GioPM said, on paper these all made sense. Hamonic had to come to Western Canada for family issues, so between Flames and Canucks. So had to overpay but he was a decent defenseman before and was just ok here.

Neal wasn’t about Tkachuk, Neal was about having a pure goal scorer to finish. He did that in Vegas, so again, on paper, it made sense. That type of player existed somewhere in there, not here of course, but given his first 2.5 months in Edmonton a couple years later.

He rolled the dice a fair bit, sure, hoping to catch fire with some guys. But I don’t think Tkachuk was going to be here long term, bridge or not. His demand to be captain and some other things were a sign that if he didn’t have that bridge he would’ve asked for a trade anyways.

You can see the argument for why literally every move, comment and announcement made by the Flames in their entire history could have worked and should not be questioned.

First, nobody ever said they should not be questioned.

Second, there are some moves you can’t say that about. For instance, the Gilmour trade, and trading J. S. Giguere for a pick so the team could protect Brathwaite in the expansion draft. Or trading Savard for Joe Shlabotnik from Siberia. Or, more recently, trading Tanguay for another team’s garbage. There have been considerably many actions that should be filed under Whiskey Tango Foxtrot.

Treliving seldom did things that were simply inexplicable.

It was mockery of a strawman. That’s a long way from an actual joke.

I don't think you quite get the point I was making. I’m not saying the moves were correct. I’m saying you can see why he made them.
