Senior Alberta government officials stalled the submission of a coal mine pollution study to a scientific journal and prevented the lead researcher from speaking publicly about his work, according to records The Narwhal obtained through a freedom of information request.

Damn it's really too bad that the lead researcher's name wasn't Jordan Peterson. Where's that freedom of speech??

Skate Canada says it will no longer host major events in Alberta following a review of the province's legislation on the participation of transgender athletes in women's sport.

"Following a careful assessment of Alberta’s Fairness and Safety in Sport Act, Skate Canada has determined that we are unable to host events in the province while maintaining our national standards for safe and inclusive sport," the organization said in a statement emailed to CBC News.

A spokesperson for the organization said the decision only applies to national and international-level events. Alberta skaters are not barred from participating in Skate Canada programs and competitions, they said.

I look forward to the slander hurled at figure skaters from politicians for this. Gonna be some really respectful stuff, I'm sure.

While that is yet another example as to how terrible the UCP government is, a part of me can't help but think that this report is like telling the story about how wet water is... do we really think there is something new to say about how bad coal mining is or how big of a polluter coal is?

The other question is why are we wasting money on expert reports? The govenrment already said they don't want to listen to experts, and they clearly don't want the public to know, and hiding it like this makes them look bad, so why are they bothering? I can only reason out that they are just that stupid to not realize this, but maybe there is another answer?

I was about to post this article too.

I don't know if there is a really big financial loss here but the publicity and the message is huge. Alberta is unreliable and unsafe.

How long until other sports boycott Alberta? It would be pretty dramatic if the Olympic Women's hockey program moved to BC and publicly said that this is the reason.

And really, this should be a reminder to everyone that the separatist shenanigans will eventually cost Alberta in the same way that the Quebec flirtations with separation cost them. Corporations will move their HQs to more stable locations and once they make that move they will not come back.

With how hard Smith et al are working for coal mines there has to be money in it for them. Is there another explanation?

They might say they are creating jobs for the poorest region in the Province.

I wouldn't be surprised if LaGrange sent a similar letter to AHS staff.

Smith “We expect (Skate Canada) will apologize and adjust their policies once they realize they are not only compromising the fairness and safety of their athletes, but are also offside with the international community, including the International Olympic Committee, which is moving in the same direction as Alberta.”

She said her United Conservative Party government’s view reflects common sense and popular opinion.

Safety? In a non-contact solo sport? Or is it fear of the locker room boogieman?

Our Premier continues to fail the conservative principle of "smaller government"

It’ll be a day to celebrate when she’s no longer around.

The UCP and their supporters do not deserve happiness.

Smith, on social media, accused the organization of refusing to hold events in Alberta "because we choose to protect women and girls in sport."

"We expect (Skate Canada) will apologize and adjust their policies once they realize they are not only compromising the fairness and safety of their athletes, but are also offside with the international community, including the International Olympic Committee, which is moving in the same direction as Alberta."

She said her United Conservative Party government's view reflects common sense and popular opinion.

Alberta Sport Minister Andrew Boitchenko echoed the premier's remarks, saying provincial rules keep girls safe and competitions fair.

"No athlete should have an unfair advantage, and no athlete should have to put themselves at risk of harm to participate in the sports they love," Boitchenko said in a statement.

"To Alberta's figure skaters — please know that our government supports your right to compete safely and fairly, even if your national sport organization won't."
Is the IOC moving in this direction as well?
