Comes to Calgary puck and complains that the conversations center around the Calgary Flames. Obviously everything discussed here is going to be compared with things the Flames have done. On another note Hughes scored tonight and actually shot the puck in the net. Didn't have ten posts about it the second it happened though.

Is this experimental poetry or do we need to “sir this is a wendy’s” you?
Sometimes a trade can be good for both teams. This is maybe one of those examples.
That’s the thought I had as well. I’m sure it’s covered in the 25 pages of this thread but the Xcel Center was going insane when Hughes scored. Great shot in the arm for the Wild who could now be bumped up into the conversation in the West. And the Canucks got a haul.
Maybe Hughes will re-sign there…it’s a great hockey town imo. I doubt it but we will see. I can’t see them winning this season or next over the Avs or Stars so maybe writing is on the wall that he’ll join his brothers but you never know

Goaltending goes to the Wild in my opinion, who have 2 solid options. They’re gonna make noise in the playoffs.
NJ had a couple deals veto'd by NTC/NMC to create cap space for Hughes
Friedman doesn't know which players but there is a lot of smoke
but at some point NJ knew they weren't going to beat the Wild's offer
Friedman doesn't know if it was offered but guesses best offer that NJ could have been Nemec, Mercer, +
Detroit didn't get far in Hughes despite looking like they could have the pieces
Vancouver wanted something from Detroit that the Wings wouldn't include
Friedman doesn't know who but suspects it was Edvinsson
Canes have the philosphy that when a star player is available, they are in it
Doesn't know how far they got, but heard they gave it a legit shot

What - an NMC getting in the way of a deal?

I think if the Wild win a playoff round and the vibes are high, he will. They now have the same advantage that the Canucks had - they can re-sign him for a full 8 years this summer, whereas if he goes to UFA his max term will be 6. Guessing at his AAV, that's a $25-30 million difference on the most important contract of his career.

They mentioned it on the radio, but the other factor is that Quinn Hughes is a direct upgrade on Luke. They both play the same positions. Would he feel like he's stymieing his little brother's growth by signing on the same team and replacing him on all the key positions?

Wouldn’t surprise me if one of the players who veto’d a trade was Hamilton. He’s already kinda redundant with L Hughes and Nemec on the roster. And he has a big cap hit.

Wings wouldn't give up Edvinsson in a Hughes deal? That's curious.
It’s not really being cavalier so much as veteran players have come to expect them. Playing hardball over NTCs at this point would mean higher cap hits and term, and risking hurting the relationship with the player. And when it comes to UFAs, just not getting the player in the first place.
GMs collectively should cut back NTCs, but in the absence of collective enforcement a GM who takes a tough stand on them will just hurt their team.

I think there’s a better than 50/50 chance he re-signs. The Wild not only have that big financial advantage, they’re a very good team: 16-3-2 in their last 21 games, and that’s with several injuries to important players and before they got Hughes. The whole brothers reuniting thing has been overblown - Hughes mainly wants to play on a good team and bank coin. And Minnesota is still close to his family’s home base in Michigan.

I'd love to understand the decision to trade Horvat years ago. That seems like the sliding doors moment for the Canucks. I wonder how things play out if they trade Miller at that time instead of Horvat.

A team with a toxic culture that was present with the Miller-Pettersson fiasco, that managed to struggle their way to the bottom, that has weak prospects, poor facilities, and a fickle fan base.
When a player could play on any team in the league while making similar money, and have repeatedly stated their main priority was winning, why would they want to stay there is a better question. This was a trade that needed to happen for both parties and while the Canucks will be worse off it is better than losing their best player for nothing and the fact that it involved younger players with upside is an indication that the management isn't completely oblivious to the reality of the situation.
This team was absolutely sewered by the OEL trade though, a huge cost for an an overpaid player with a bad buyout that is preventing the team from being successful... That is the trade that slammed the Canucks window shut.

Am I right in recalling Hovat was traded because of tension between himself and another player? Was that Miller as well? If so, what a total disaster that acquisition was for Vancouver, Miller basically grenaded their entire team twice.
