I think people are mad because this is what they wanted the Tkachuk trade to be like but I have a hard time giving Vancouver the credit for a decisive rebuild move when they managed themselves into this position starting with the Horvat trade with attempts to remain competitive up until this trade.

Plus I just don’t think there were many teams with star veteran assets willing to move them mid season for Hughes, unlike the Tkachuk trade which was off season. Calgary was getting a pick, a 115 point winger and a RHS 2D who scored 44 points, plus a lower level prospect. That’s a way easier trade to do off season. I just can think of a similar deal that could be offered mid-season for Hughes.

JT Miller had seasons of 99, 82, and 103 points before he was traded. Superstar is probably hyperbole but so is downplaying him.

The Canucks were in a tough spot and I see some giving them credit for doing something quickly but it's a pretty meh package for a bonafide franchise player like Quinn Hughes. The big piece is Zeev Buium in my opinion, I like Rossi but don't see him being a huge point producer and Liam Ohgren isn't anything to get excited about. 1st round pick is always nice too but pretty meh return for a a player like Hughes. The Wild now have a year and a half to sign him or could possibly get a similar return if they decide to move him a year from now.

I don’t think anyone is saying he doesn’t want to play with his brothers, full stop. But it is complicated. Russo had a good piece in the Athletic today. Hughes’ agent, Pat Brisson pointed out that if they wanted to force a trade to NJ, they could and would have, had it been the plan. Sounds like the future isn’t as predetermined as some would believe.

Quote:
But there’s also reason to believe Quinn may not want to sign with the Devils — because of how it would affect Luke, who plays the same position and would be pushed to a secondary role.

“We’re dealing with a very unique concept with three brothers who are superstars in the NHL,” Brisson said. “So that is a conversation that started to take place as soon as Luke became an NHL player. But those are just conversations up in the air. It’s not like strategically that we have that planned, because if we did that, then we’d make sure that Quinn would probably end up in Jersey — perhaps right now. So at this point, anything could happen. Who knows? They may never play together, all three of them. I can honestly say that.”

6:48 into the post Hughes era and Buium has a goal and an assist. So that seems to be going well so far.

Buium will become a star in his own right. It's a shame that the Canucks, despite their complete incompetence in managing the franchise, have stumbled their way into a decent setup for a rebuild.

Flames have to be more aggressive in trading players with term on their contract. It served them well with Markstrom, but it was a missed opportunity on guys like Hanifin and Tanev (and now potentially Andersson).

Imagine the jolt of confidence you get when you've just had your 20th birthday, 30 games into your rookie NHL season after being drafted in the first round... and you've just been traded for a Norris trophy winner in his prime -- a guy who's been one of the two best defencemen in the game for the last 3-4 years.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the Canucks go on a bit of a run here. They still have talent.

It's an absolutely stunning package for a player that wasn't prepared to guarantee to resign or cooperate in the trade process at all who has a well known preferred destination

I'm gob smacked the Wild gave this much up for a rental

Teams usually go on short term runs after trades like this...I said it four pages ago when Rhett was talking about the Canucks locking up a top 3 pick with this move.

Vancouver turning a 26 year old franchise D into a 20 year old future franchise D + three other assets is really friggin good. Quinn Hughes is one of the best defenceman to ever play the game ("one of" as in, in a group along side others - for anyone thinking I'm calling him Bobby Orr). Buium has a chance of being in the same ballpark as Hughes. Will he be a one-to-one equal or better? I'm not ready to make that claim, but there's no doubt this kid is going to be very good.

Edit: I keep calling Rossi an "other asset" but he's very likely a 30-goal scorer in the next 2-3 years lol.

Particularly if they can keep Demko healthy, who is a high quality goalie on the rare occasions he, yknow, actually plays hockey. They really need to trade more guys if they want a shot at a top 5 pick.

Almost all the rest of their vets have full NMCs, and just recently signed long term deals. Waivers are of course possible, given they are pretty crappy. But Vancouver is a nice place to live if you are rich, so a move to Ottawa isn't exactly appealing.

That is amazing considering they are playing against a future hall of famer today! LOL!
