Usual Oiler organizational blame tree aided by local friendly media messengers whipping up the mouth breathes there, as proven over the last few decades:
- Supposed terrible goalie - blamed for lack of structure and talent defensively. Shipped out. Like Dubnyk, Talbot and others they are often caught by surprise but are relieved to move on and their talent and will hasn’t been totally beat out of them, so they continue their careers happily.
Next to take blame and the distraction away from real problem is some random third liner - talked up to unrealistic top 3 expectations (think PullRV). Put on waivers or AHL.
- Coach next to get blame, but he makes it through this one but heat is turned up by the organization and media enough to make him know the next time he’s questioned, he’s done.
- Backup goalie next blamed for not stepping up for the new goalie. Stays but has pressure applied.
- Random Defensive draft pick or acquired defenseman not living up to expectations. Waivers or down to farm team. Problem solved.
-Newly acquired goalie now once again to blame
- Coach - doesn’t make it past the second inquisition, now either totally neutered from making decisions, or gone.
GM lasts a couple rounds of the above but he is neutered as well more and more at each of these turns and the knives are sharpened at each turn for him too.
So, we are at the the supposed terrible goalie now gone, stage. As above, the next target for the fan base to blame is some random forward singled out of an herd of them, apparently not pulling his weight. Mangipane would be a good guess.

And once again the Oilers off season is set to be nothing. Just Henrique, Roslovic, Tomasek, Jones and Pickard coming off. Thats a whopping $8 million to spend.

Aaaaaaaannnnd it's been overshadowed by a much better, more practical deal that actually warrants discussion.
You know Ron and snet will still be slobbering all over it tho

Has anyone asked what Jarry did to Kyle Dubas to have him send to the gulag?

Remember what Trotz said about Dubnyk after acquiring him from Edmonton:
Quote:
|
“We got Devan from Edmonton, and what we realized very quickly was that Devan has a lot of… I’ll say bad habits he’s picked up this year,” Predators coach Barry Trotz told Nashville radio station 94.9 Game2 on Wednesday. “We started him at home, and you could really see he was out of sync in his game, so we wanted to spend some time with him working with [goaltending coach] Mitch Korn, just being able to get his game in order.”
|

I wonder if there will be similar comments out of Pittsburg.
In addition, Skinner was a very inconsistent goalie. He had bad games, but he also was able to play enough good games to win several rounds of playoff hockey. The jury is out on Jarry.

And they are falling hard for Roslovic. So expect an AAV of too high paired to a term that makes normal people scratch their heads and greaser fans aroused.

Jarry has played a total of eight playoff games in his NHL history with Pittsburgh and is 2-6. He’s never won a playoff series. Skinner has played 50 playoff games and is 26-18, and he’s won six playoff series.

One thing kinda missed by Oiler media is besides Skinner being kneed in the head that ended up in a concussion and missing seven games, he has missed two games, one due to Covid protocol and another for illness.
Jarry has been on the injury report more times (ten times) than games Skinner has missed. Mostly being lower body injuries and looking at the stats it would seem Jarry will have to move a ton more playing in front of Edmonton’s defense and that was before Kulak was shipped.

And he's older. Rebounding from those injuries is going to take longer and longer.

one of my customer's nephews played for the penguins. they have nothing but good things to say about that organization, even after his nephew went on to play for other teams

The other thing he mentioned to justify the trade and having to trade Kulak is that Kulak has priced himself out of edmonton. He figures Kulak will get 5m and at that price would have lost him anyways.
Not exactly something I think you want to hear when trying to run it back. Even worse they had to add a pick in the trade. So now they went lateral with the goalie to try to get a reset because their team is soft, but they made their defense worse. All this because their cap situation is complete mess.
I don't know how you can look at that trade and think they are a better team.
|
Older, more expensive, more injury prone goaltender and less defensive stability on an already defensively fragile team and losing draft picks in the process.
Better? I think they got worse.
Someone else said it in this thread, this is polishing the brass on the Titanic, its still all going down. Its effectively change for the sake of change hoping that some magic happens.
And it well might! But as with all Magic...eventually the trick ends and the illusion dissipates.

Isn’t a mentally fragile team a result of weak leadership? I wonder who that is?
I guess it manifests itself in not backchecking or trying to defend. In other words, not my job.
Is Kulak a 5 million dman? Seriously, is that the criticism? That he’s too good?
Baghdad Bobby Stauffer to the rescue with whatever can be made up for the unwashed masses.
I’m hoping for a skinner shutout and a Jarry early goalie pull.
