I think there is a good chance the Jays go for volume of relievers rather than going after the big name.
Closers are like kickers in football. Other than the very, very best ones, they can turn into a pumpkin seemingly overnight and throwing big money after one is one of the riskier choices you can make. I think they make a play for Fairbanks but might settle on a few good arms and see how it plays out. If Garcia is healthy, he provides a solid floor and Hoffman would be an elite setup guy.

Yeah at this point I'm hoping they get Fairbanks. Makes for a nice group of four late inning guys with Fairbanks, Hoffman, Yimi and Varland.
Then they literally have a plethora of options to fill out the rest and see who is healthy and has their A game going.
I am starting to wonder though, if they plan to use Varland as the main closer.

Which seems reasonable, to be honest. Assuming they go with a 5 man rotation you have room for 8 relief pitchers.
I figure Lauer has earned the long-man role, and Garcia/Varland/Hoffman feel like a decent group of leverage arms. That leaves 4 more spots.
They already have Fischer/Fluharty/Schultz/Nance/Estrada/Bruihl/Bastardo/Miles/Little competing for those spots. It never hurts to grab another good arm or two, but I think it's not unreasonable to see what you have there and then pick up a couple of guys in-season and/or at the deadline to supplement. I feel like that list above will probably include 4 guys that can be reasonably effective in a low/medium leverage role.
Edited to add: they have 6 starters right now, so I could see them starting the year with a 6 man rotation. That means 1 less RP spot, and you might need another long man to compensate for the lower number of relievers.

lol is the strategy always bringing him in to pitch after Yesavage?
The highest release point to the lowest release point should cause additional issues for batters.

Like the Rogers pickup a lot. Boy, that’s a bigger contract than I’d have expected though.

Sidearming right-hander Chase Lee was acquired by the Toronto Blue Jays from the Detroit Tigers on Friday for minor league left-hander Johan Simon.

Really liking the pitching. Hopefully get at least one bat, if not two. I’d hope for Bichette to return. If they get Tucker instead, getting a good defensive short stop with a decent bat would be adequate.

Jonah Hill and Brad Pitt got Chad Bradford for $237k because he pitched submarining like Rogers does.
Will see how this goes. That’s a big contract for the pen. Had to outbid the Metswhich was probably both a decent increase on both term and money, and was plan B after Suarez signed in ATL.
Should’ve sold him on the fact his last name is plastered all over Toronto, the stadium and TV, to get a bit of a discount.

Rogers is a model of consistency. Low Ks but that should play with the Jays defense. Hardly walks anyone. Big contract though.

The pitching depth the Jays have now is insane.
Please let us land Tucker or Bo. Preferably both.

With arb estimates fangraphs has the Jays at $294 million LT payroll after the Rogers signing.
Thats into the 2nd highest bracket and only $10 million from going into the highest bracket. With the Jays still in on Tucker it's pretty clear they have the green light to spend into the highest bracket. At this point if they were to sign both Tucker and Bo we're looking at around a $350 million payroll.
Dodgers are currently at $359 million i think

Berrios will be gone and save 13-18 million depending how much if any they have to pick up of his salary
I don’t think they are concerned about the luxury tax aprons because there will be a work stoppage and changes and they prob assume everything resets once a new structure agreed in CBA

Simply put, if the Jays can get desired players, they get them and sort the money out later, new CBA coming or not.
At least two of these signings are 100% only because of the WS run and the other ones have a the run being a big part in that.
Previously years the Jays pitch to each of them would’ve been impressive and considered and probably more money, but still end up the bridesmaid.
