This non-bike rider loves bike lanes. Whether I'm driving or walking, I'd rather the bikes be in their own space.

The good
Approved Initiative Petition Information
The approved citizen initiative application is for a legislative proposal as follows:

The Government of Alberta shall prohibit by law any and all new coal mining activities, including new approvals and permits, within the Eastern Slopes of the Rocky Mountains.

The bad is that should the UCP pass Bill 14 in the next few days. If it does, Bill 14 has a provision in it that will dissolve Corb's petition, which only becomes effective 7 days from now.

As for the bike lanes, couldn't the city just enshrine its bike lane priorities under the municipal charter somehow? Though, I guess then the UCP could just repeal allowing municipal charters. [shrug]
When has the charter ever stopped this government?

Yes. I bike to work along 12th Ave and if I don’t have a bike lane, I’ll just be on the road and force all the cars to swerve around me and piss everyone off in the process. Since there’s a good number of commuters who use this lane, I think this actually makes traffic slower.

I’ve almost been hit 4 times in 2 months, and that’s with a bike lane. If that’s gone I’ll almost certainly need to buy a dash cam for my bike.

Watch first 3 minutes - I’m in there with 100 protesters. Importantly, we had a dozen people from Piikani Nation.

Don’t know that they will dissolve it - Smith invited us to start one at Fort Macleod town hall.

Protestors push back at Northback presentation

https://lethbridgeherald.com/news/le...-presentation/

Quote:
“The significant adverse environmental effects were greater than any uncertain economic benefit,” says organizer Cheryl Bradley, director of the Southern Alberta Group for Environment,. “And the city of Lethbridge has 5 times since 2020 passed resolutions opposing a mine on Grassy Mountain because of the impacts on the Old Man River and a concern about contamination of our drinking water with selenium.”

Bradley says there is currently no technology that can effectively remove selenium from waterways once it has leaked into them. She also pointed to a recent report that shows wind-blown coal dust from mines in the Elk Valley have contaminated snowpacks and lakes in Alberta.

Chris Spearman, spoeksman for the group Water Fod Food, attended the Chamber event as a concerned citizen.

“I’m not opposed to economic development, but when they are reluctant to provide answers, that just raises suspicions. says former mayor Chris Spearman. I think Northback would do themselves a lot of favors (if they would just provide answers).”

Spearman says he spent 18 months trying to get answers to his concerns through Northback’s processes but got referred to AER. He still didn’t get any answers from Young during the Chamber event.

The environmental risks associated with coal mining primarily involve long-term water contamination, permanent landscape changes and biodiversity loss that persist for decades or centuries; often despite current regulations and reclamation efforts..

Media were not allowed to attend.

After the presentation there was a designated question period.

Mike Young would not respond to specific questions about wind blown coal dust or removing excess selenium from river water.
Mining CEO touts benefits of Grassy Mountain project as protesters warn of environmental harm

The Watershed feeds many of southern Alberta’s rivers and lakes, covering more than 23,000 square kilometres in the province. It supplies fresh water to communities and farms across the region.

“If the river was contaminated, and we have examples from British Columbia from Elk Valley, where contamination has occurred several hundred kilometres downstream in Lake Koocanusa, in Lake Montana,’ says Bradley. “The mining [companies] in the Elk Valley has spent over a billion dollars trying to figure out how to remove selenium, and they have not succeeded.”

She also pointed to a recent report that shows wind-blown coal dust from mines in the Elk Valley have contaminated snowpacks and lakes in Alberta.

It's weird to me that this is even a question. What's weirder is 15% said yes.

"Govern me harder, daddy" I believe is what the yes vote meant to say.

doesn't surprise me for that part of Alberta. I'm actually a bit shocked the % wasn't higher.

It's hilarious isn't it. UCP keep saying they can do what they want since they were democratically elected and thus it's what the people want.

Then a democratically elected city council in Calgary installs bike lanes, and that's a big no no.

Wasn't Dani and the merry band of idiots saying they dont want any overreach from the federal gvmt? Now they're doing that to municipal governments.

Every accusation is a confession.

Also, don't forget that the UCP are not just exerting overreach into the municipal governments, they are doing the same with other provinces (BC specifically).

Fascism does not like to be limited.
