It’s possible things have changed recently but a while back I heard this from one of the Flames execs.

When in the hell did Murray Edwards ever have anything to do with the Phoenix Coyotes?

Is this a good thread to complain about Don Maloney?

Murray Edwards may or may not be the problem. Either way, you are correct...

Oddball thread. He ran the Coyotes?

He is too malleable to whatever the GM wants to do. When Treliving wanted to compete now and sell off all the futures for players to compete he let the organization do that. When Conroy came in with a tear it to the ground rebuild he let the GM do that. Probably needs to be more assertive on the hockey ops side.

Can we get Murray to be our EBUG? Then he could really help the team!

I find these threads fascinating. People are obviously clamouring for a rebuild, but some seem to miss that the Flames have been doing nothing else since Conroy took over. Sure, you can find Maloney's words concerning, and you might worry about the Flames missing the right time to trade the likes of Kadri and Coleman. But all you really have to do is look at Craig Conroy's trade history as Flames GM.

I've left off a couple of minor moves (flipping late round picks with the Flyers during the draft, trading Emilio Pettersen and burning a 5th for Nikita Okhotyuk), but those were the major moves. Please, point me to the moves that are not those of a franchise in the middle of a rebuild. The Flames might not use the dreaded R word, but the trades speak for themselves. They've shipped out numerous cornerstone players while adding a number of young roster players that fit the time line (like Frost and Bahl), a heap of draft picks (including 3 firsts) and prospects like Brzustewicz. They've pretty much burned it to the ground under Conroy, but overperformed last season. You can argue that the likes of Lindholm and Hanifin forced their hands, but they didn't have to trade them for picks and prospects. Treliving proved that very point when he didn't trade Tkachuk for futures, but tried to keep the "win now" window open (and failed miserably).

Again, I get the concerns. I won't pretend like I didn't care about Maloney's interviews and worried about the direction going forward. But at the end of the day, we should focus on the actual moves that are made and judge the front office by them instead of words. I have no doubt that they'll move Andersson at some point (and probably for a good haul, given his recent play) and add even more futures. We'll see about Kadri and Coleman, but even if they aren't moved: every major move Conroy has made suggests we are rebuilding.

Murray Edwards was on the NHL Board of Govenors because he owns the Calgary Flames. And had a say in discussions of the future of the Phoenix Coyotes. That's all I could find on Google.

I only mentioned it because some article I read joked that he had ptsd from his indirect dealing with Phoenix.

I understand he has the largest individual stake, which still could be a minority when the others are combined. And there’s been considerable consolidation as the ownership group aged. There are only 4 left.

But he’s in charge.

The Flames need a direction to go. Whether it be a re-build or re-tool on the fly. Because I'm sick of being a mid-team, and we've been that way for a long time now.

Discuss please.
Maybe the question should be. What’s wrong with you? Do you think Murray, should put out a public announcement, and say. Ok people we are rebuilding we are going to lose a lot of games, so don’t waste your money coming to watch any games, I will put out a bulletin when you should come back.
Maybe he should take the number off Kadri back, and replace it with a for sale sign. Think about it man Murray Edward’s isn’t a billionaire because he is stupid. Without him we may not even have a team. Is that what you would prefer? Why would ownership or management show their cards on what they are doing. Like them or not they are professionals who, know their job, and how to do it. You must be very poor at Poker bud.

Well I know we are in a re-build even though they haven't said it officially. I just want some announcement like "Hey, don't worry fans we gonna go through a tough transition (rebuild), but rest assured we are gonna be contenders in the near future!" That to me is direction.

It just seems like ownership is mum to the situation. And maybe putting Craig Conroy in a tough spot if ownership is not on board with either doing a full rebuild or do a re-tool on the fly.

And I don't play Poker. It's gambling, and gambling is a losing game. House always wins!

Complaining about the complaining is actually a worse form of posting than the original complaining.

These people are starting a discussion (which, while redundant, is at least directed at the team and not at how other people post) and participation isn't mandatory.

Pointing out that its redundant adds absolutely nothing, let alone when a dozen people feel compelled to say the same thing.

That said, I realize im complaining about the complainers of the complainants so I'll leave it at that.

So you don’t think ownership and management, talk everyday? You don’t think they have an ongoing plan? A plan that they don’t and shouldn’t have to advertise, so they don’t look like the canucks. If you need direction, get somebody to show you the way to the corner store. These guys are probably just a little bit smarter than you.

I'm certainly trying.

The number of times I reply vs the number of times I almost reply is on a steep decline as I honestly can't have the same argument over and over and over again.

Exhausting.

Personally, I'm just going to chill and watch it unfold as ...

I see they've already been rebuilding.
Conroy is extended so a lot of the chaos last week has been put to bed.
The team has been prudent in asset management in the last 2.5 seasons.
They've drafted in the first round two years in a row and headed for three.
They drew a line in the sand on term and dollars for Andersson that appears to have him on the block.

All that's left for me (other than drafting well) is when the team pulls the trigger. And without any actual knowledge of the team driving too hard a bargain I will trust they have a level and will move at least Andersson when that level is met.

The rest is just people complaining about the same thing without any actual information day after day after day.

I don't see the joy in that, never will.

If you count young prospects picked up in trades (basically only adding Hunter B) and where they were drafted this is the Flames draft record since 2023

2023 - 4 picks in the first 3 rounds
2024 - 6 picks in the first 3 rounds
2025 - 4 picks in the first 3 rounds

Projected for assuming no future trades for picks or prospects (prospects could move the 23-25 numbers

2026 - 5 picks in the first 3 rounds

19 picks in the first 3 rounds over a 4 year period is a franchise record. There has never been a 4 year period where they have accumulated that many picks in the first 3 rounds. Suspect Conroy adds to that number before the end of this year. Probably also adds to the 27 and 28 numbers too.
