I’d keep Weegar

Weegar is at a really cap-friendly hit now and is much, much better than his current play indicates (I don't even think he's playing that badly either). He loves it here in Calgary, he isn't THAT old, and personally I see him as the next captain of this team. We still do need A COUPLE vets to steady the coming youth movement, and he fits that equation easily.

Since I believe Huby won’t be going anywhere anyway, we would do well to keep him, Backs and Weegar as vets to help usher in the youth movement. Then you would have a second layer of leadership coming up behind them with Bahl, Farabee, and Frost. I have a feeling that Zary won’t be here for the long haul.

They would be foolish if they don't ask for something better. Huberdeau is rich but he may never get a chance to chase a cup. It's all based on what they want in the big idea. The League is soft physically, but the players have made it soft mentally.

0.13 PPG. I'd still love to see Zary become a second line mainstay for us, but that bet on himself does not seem to have paid off. Continuing on this trajectory, he'd struggle to get another NHL job, though he'd still be set for life.

Let's not forget that Calgary still has to reach the cap floor. So they have to keep some vets around.

Weegar, Huberdeau, Backlund and Lomberg is plenty.

Trade the rest for assets.

Yup that feels like the ideal layering.

It's too bad we can't really count Sharangovich as part of that second layer of leadership considering he's the oldest of the bunch (27) and signed to the biggest/longest contract.

Zary is really struggling and is starting to feel like a change of scenery candidate, but he has been that proverbial odd man out, getting shuffled all over the lineup, and that's after two big injuries. I have optimism still that he can stabilize and find his consistent game if we're patient.

If the Flames sell off the vets this year I do think Conroy will be right in there on any sub 25 year old player who looks like he could be part of the core in the offseason. I could see him being much more aggressive to chase those guys. He don’t like the price for K’Andre Miller last summer but he might be more willing to spend on a player like that next year.

He seems to be playing “scared”. Takes less chances near the boards, takes “safe” routes to the net … so rarely gets there. Injuries do that to some players.

Yeah it isn't a surprise he has a competent partner and he looks better.

Calgary should not be sending a first round pick+ for the opportunity of signing a player like Miller to a large long term contract. Maybe if he is the long term answer at centre.

I just think if the Flames walk into the draft with more than 2 1st we will see Conroy making some deals to add pieces to the team sooner than later. If not next summer then 2027.

Conroy has not been shy to say he would move a 1st if the deal made sense. If they strip away a lot of their veterans this year I think they will be in the trade market next summer.

That sounds much like a plan to get back into the mushy middle as soon as possible.

It’s likely not the best way to build a Stanley cup winning team.

You have to go through the mushy middle to reach the top from the bottom.

In, and of itself, not a problem. The problem occurs when a team is STAYING there...never moving up or down.

But sacrificing draft capital to get prematurely to the mushy middle means getting less chances at elite talent, and increasing your chances of staying there.

Done correctly, you might be in the middle for one year, like I expect the Sharks, Ducks and Hawks will be.

I personally don't think any of us can speak to a plan without knowing what player(s) we are talking about, what picks and when.

The notion that a 1st can never be dealt by a rebuilding team is really a limiting rule.
