I hate black people being that way, they need to be more white. Cellys after touchdowns also need to be stopped. Everyone needs to be like me, humble and self-effacing, like I am. Its a roundabout way of saying it, but I think I see where you're going with it and fundamentally I agree.

I'm there to see a show and get some laughs, frankly, I think if a comedian genuinely offends me then thats on me and the comedian has done a very good job.

The comic is there to make you laugh not adhere to some abstract but somehow apparently universal code of morality. They're not on stage to recalibrate anyone's moral compass and if you find yourself adjusting said compass to what a complete stranger on a stage with a microphone says...then you might need to join a Cult because clearly thinking for yourself is not your forte.

When a comedian takes it too far? Thats usually the best part!

Kind of like movies and TV. Its a show. Its not real and you're not a monster for laughing.

Whether a comedian offends you or not is not a measure of how good a job they’ve done.

That’s like saying a chef did a good job if he served you something unexpected. I mean… maybe if it’s flavours you wouldn’t think to put together or something you didn’t expect to like, but not if it’s undercooked and rancid ground meat.

Being offensive takes no talent at all.

This is kind of a strange way to approach comedy, but that's not really the subject here.

No one is saying that a comedian shouldn't be offensive or should conform to some cast mold. If you like jokes about trans people and enjoy watching a guy stroke his ego on stage by all means, fill your boots. Dave Chappelle is your guy and I'm not here to knock your fandom.

I love me some Jimmy Carr. Bastardizing a Jim Jefferies quote: "There is a big f###ing difference between things that I think and things that I think are funny to say."

Some of us are just put off by Chappelle's characteristics as a person and a stand-up. Having a big ego generally doesn't translate into great comedy. It's why guys like Maher, Seinfeld, Miller, and Chappelle can be so unappealing.

There's a reason "Killing Them Softly" is the best of all of his specials. It was written and performed at a time when Dave was like many of his peers. Now he's uber-rich and convinced he is god's gift to comedy.

That's just not funny.

I've watched Chappelle's last few specials and, frankly, they were not my jam, so I'm not forking out cash for that.

He can say whatever he wants but if I know that its not for me then I'm not going to pay to go see him.

Theres lots of other comics that suit my tastes more.

If the prices were more reasonable I would absolutely see Chappelle live because, as I said before, that's a bucket list level of performer to see, even if I think the quality has taken a hit.

His aura doesn't justify the cost.

There are a number of stand ups that dominated in popularity. Going by pure revenue, guys like Larry the Cable Guy, Gabriel Iglesias, and freaking Jeff Dunham hold records. Dane Cook was a powerhouse for about a 3-5 year period, and there's still people that think Bert Kreisher is funny.

You're right, it's all about taste. That said, a Mount Rushmore should start with Carlin and Pryor.

This is definitely part of it. Chappelle got offended one time because of something a group of trans people might have said. And now he jut can't let it go, as it interferes with his ego too much. I don't even think he really cares about the politics. He was just personally offended, and, in his mind, no one should get away with doing that to him.

Which is exactly why that material only plays with that “Are you TRIGGERED, Lib?” type that wears a tough mask but is actually the most easily offended, spineless weirdo you can find. Like, we all know it’s not actually funny or insightful, at best it’s his worst material. But I guess it plays well with people who just feel constantly victimized by everything and need to lash out to cover for it, since at the core of that material, that’s really all it is.

Chappelle IS great. His material WAS great. He still knows how to deliver a joke when his head isn’t up his own ass. It’s just sad that he had to waste so much time and effort on an unfunny grudge against people he thinks are less than him because they offended him.

Even the trans stuff I thought could have been turned into an interesting bit, I briefly found the 'why are these issues seemingly taken more seriously than racial issues' angle potentially interesting and there's probably a lot of ways to go with that. But he always bailed on a cheap laugh instead of fleshing it out.

Not that I'm against a cheap laugh, but if you're gonna go there go there purposefully. Going there just to go there is a hack move. Once, sure, but as a running joke for years? Meh.

There is *funny* trans humour if you catch any of those roast battles. I don’t think there is really anything that is off-limits, but also as Jimmy Carr pointed out, it has to be funny.
