Yeah they need an intervention.

I seem to recall some controversy when Darryl Sutter was GM, it was reported that he didn't even have a term. He was just a regular full time employee. Obviously not a way that teams normally do it of course.

Considering the deal still hasn’t been announced it feels like the leak it’s close was deliberate to calm the fans a bit. It will be done but surprised there hasn’t been a formal announcement 24 hours later

This is sort of the impression that I get as well.

2 years is a fair extension. I don't think he's done anything to deserve a 5 year extension. This lets him cook for a couple more years and show that he's worth a long term extension.

Personal opinion:
I like Conny, but I don't think he has shown much one way or the other. I would kind of have preferred to see how he handles the upcoming trades before re-signing.
Then again, if he makes those trades knowing he'll still be around in the future, maybe he makes better long term moved?
Eh who knows. I currently have zero faith in the organization until proven otherwise.
But at least Conny is likeable, so there's that.

My guess (and this is absolutely just a guess, but one that I think roughly fits the signs) is that there is or was a bit of a power struggle inside the organization on where to take the organization next.
Maloney thought that fans would support his side, but was wrong. If this is the case, then I would guess the public reaction has now made it more likely that Team Tank gets what they want.
Of course, it could be that Maloney was looking for fan support because he was already losing, in which case this affected nothing.
Of course another possibility is that this is actually the organizations view, but for whatever reason Conroy didn't want to come out and say it. (Possibly because he knows it's unpopular.)
Who knows. Doesn't really matter, we'll see what happens eventually.

I'd maybe have gone 3-years just because I think this is a reasonable timeframe for the team to start getting better.

also possible that the organization wanted to check the temperature re: possible rebuild and Maloney, given that a Conroy extension was already agreed, could be the fall guy to take the hit.
But I don't know. The Flames not making Conroy, but Maloney available for an interview with Francis when Conroy was still without a contract just is a weird look all around. I like to think they knew what they were doing, but it just feels like a bit of a mess. A lot of the noise could have easily been avoided.

I don't think there was ever a power struggle. I think they're just that inept at managing PR and fan interaction (Francis suggesting this was done a while back but they didn't want to announce it with the team at the bottom).
They could be right though ... what's the VEN diagram for hostile twitter accounts and season ticket holders? Guessing it's not all that overlapped.
So then the question is the season ticket holder base. Are they equally angry? Less involved? Only care about winning (their fear)?
I get the concern. But I don't think the trying to dupe your own fans angle is smart in a hockey market.
