If it really is a two year deal, and that term is organization driven…it’s so bizarre.

That’s just the 2026/2027 season before he goes right back to being a “lame duck” situation.

That’s just a straight up weird extension length.

I suspect Conroy will make the rounds once this is officially announced by the hockey club.

A 2 year extension means we get 2 more years of Conroy drafting. Let this man COOK!

I'm not so sure.

I mean...when they hired Feaster it was very clearly as a 'Sacrificial Lamb.' He was here to get rid of heroes, be the villain and then jettisoned.

I dont see that being Conroy's mission. They could have hired any one of a number of clownshoes chuckleheads to do that.

Whereas Conroy navigated some pretty waters getting rid of vets for assets and not handing out stupid contracts. I get the feeling he's here for the long-haul, however that makes the 2-year contract somewhat more puzzling.

I dont think they're feeding Conroy to the Wolves here.

I think the short term could be interpreted a few ways:

1. Maybe this is an indication that Maloney’s days are numbered. Conroy could be lined up to become president of hockey operations after this next extension. Maybe with Iginla being groomed to be the next GM?

2. Maybe it’s Conroy wanting a shorter deal after his experience so far. It’s well known that the owner is a difficult one to work for. Maybe Conroy wants to keep his options open to move on if it feels like ownership/Maloney won’t let him rebuild the team in the patient way that works best? I think a lot of teams would be interested in Conroy’s services if he was available.

3. Maybe ownership is basically using the short contract as a safeguard to motivate Conroy to not do a long rebuild. If, by the the 2027-2028 season, they don’t see some progress moving out of the “bottoming out” phase of the rebuild, they will look to move on to get things moving to playoff contention in the new building.

I look at it as our voice being heard.

I fully believe what you guys are doing over at Flames Nation, especially the guys on Barnburner not letting up, this is a direct result.

So at least they are listening somehow, keep it up!

Happy that it's done but only 2 years ... that doesn't scream that ownership is in love with the way the rebiggle is going. .

Edit: although looking back I think Treliving only got a 2 year extension in 2017 and then was extended again in 2019. So maybe more just Edwards being a bit cheap in general.

I'm sure if Edwards had his way all his Flames employees would be on year to year contracts. I imagine it pained him to fire Sutter just after extending him knowing he was going to have to pay him not to coach. He wants to keep the contract as short as possible in the the case he or Bologne want to pivot from Conny so he doesn't have to pay him not to work for the Flames.

When i was looking at GM contracts online, 90% of the leagues team do not make public the terms of the GM contract. Flames seem to be one of the few, so who knows if this is standard practice to just renew a couple years each time.

That is nonsense. A real fan wants the Stanley Cup. A real fan wants a consistent contender for 10 years, not to strive to be some lucky Cinderella team. Can these people just put a sock in it and let us get a superstar player? Wishing to roll Yahtzee on another Gaudreau or a late-round star is a fool's gambit and statistically rare. I’m not getting any younger here.
Really?

Not sure I'd agree with that.

I think lamenting every win will get you some focus.
Ignoring details of a rebuild already underway will get some push back.

But wanting a rebuild is fair game.

I think it simply gives them leverage over him in case he makes a bad move. I’m not too worried about the term. I see this as a clear win that our voices were heard. Now burn it down

I don’t have an opinion one way or another on the two years but I did have to laugh at your commitment to criticizing/blaming Flames ownership for this, going as far as coming up with one, realising it didn’t have legs, and seamlessly switching to another all in the same post lol.

He's also still new to the job. I think it makes sense to see if he can show signs of the rebuild trending towards an upward trajectory 2 years from now. I want Flames to be patient with the rebuild, but at the same time I can understand them wanting to ensure it doesn't become a rebuild in perpetuity.

So if there's signs that pieces are in place that the team is projecting upward, I'm sure he should get another renewal. The organization seen this week alone how pissed off the fanbase can get if they don't respect the process, and give Conroy a fair shot at this. I just hope that they don't rush the rebuild like last time with Treliving. Have more commitment to retaining future building assets, and don't sacrifice those for older players until the core of the roster has proven that they are on the cusps of entering cup contention.

I think it is very hard to argue that Conroy has done anything other than a good job thus far. He inherited an absolute mess from Treliving and had to navigate some choppy waters immediately by trading 5 pending UFA’s in his first months on the job.

There is a lot of positive buzz about the recent drafts and prospect pool and how it is trending up. He locked in some key pieces like Wolf, Coronato, and Bahl who can be part of the long term vision.

I am glad we are going to see this continue. I would love for Conroy to not only be the guy who stripped it down but also let him be the guy that built it back up and lead this team through their next contention window

I'm relieved, but I'm still not happy about the situation. Why wasn't he extended and announced before the season started as a sign of confidence in their man? Now you had the distraction of the contract and The Interview.

####ing Flames.

I would add
- There is a difference between supporting and advocating for a re-build and advocating for a full tear-down. I think what people frame as a re-build v. non rebuild debate is more a debate around tear down v. non tear-down. My guess is that 90% or more of this site support a re-build of some sort

I know people have been ragging on the term but aren't the 2 to 3 year deals standard practice when it comes to GMs around the league ?
