I don't think Maloney's vision isn't aligned with Conroy's. I just think he came on to do his best to convince ticket-buyers that the Flames aren't interested in rebuilding and that they will be turning a corner.


If you believe him, then I would say the management team (including him) is incompetent, and they all deserve to be turfed.


If you don't believe him, then I would say he was acting in bad faith intentionally lying about the product he is trying to sell you - call it a 'bait and switch', or just being a 'slimy used car salesman'. This is how I took it, and I found it offensive.


However, I am not advocating for Maloney to get fired. I don't know what he does or doesn't do (aside from disastrous interviews full of BS). I am not going to stomp my feet and demand this man's resignation. For all I know, he has actually been great?


As for Frank Seravalli - he sure sounded like a passionate 'fan' who wanted change and sees Maloney as an impediment to the Flames' future success. Or he is just doing his part to a) get some clicks, and b) make a lot of noise to create chaos for the Flames. I thought it was weird that he was that passionate in what seems like a very transparent attempt at appeasing the season ticket holder base.

Maloney's rise through this organization never sat right with me, felt like the most unearned, float upwards trajectory.

Got hired as a scout as a favor from Treliving.
Promoted to an assistant GM (same role as Conroy, Pascall, Chris Snow)
Treliving walks. He gets promoted above Conroy and Pascall to President of Hockey Ops.

That said I didn't care as long as he did what a PoHo should do, like Burke after hiring Treliving and kind of fade off into the background.

But if he's interfering with team direction to the point where he's upset in 2026 about trading the 2024 UFAs. Insulting Gavin McKenna in the media, an undrafted 17 year old college kid who has local ties and would love to be a Flame. Slamming fans for wanting a rebuild claiming he knows better. All this while you failed upwards and have a record of mediocrity? Frank is right. OP is right. Get him outta here

Murray allegedly lost his job for being a jerk, but it seems like he's probably a better hockey mind.
The Flames also have Nonis. With these guys around, it's a bit odd to see Moloney having risen to the top.

I really don’t understand the need for a POHO role. When the concept was first introduced Burke claimed it was a mentorship role for a rookie GM to help avoid costly mistakes. While the premise makes sense, I think it adds an unnecessary layer of complication to the process.

In Conroy’s situation he has surrounded himself with experienced personnel like Nonis and it seems that decisions are being made collectively in consultation with the assistants and analytics etc. Having an extra layer (apparently the conduit between ownership and hockey ops) seems like it handcuffs the GM.

Obviously, I don’t know the details of the working relationship between Conroy and Maloney, but if the visions differ then it can become problematic fast. The GM should have the autonomy and authority to execute his plan that he presents to ownership. Also, plans need to evolve as well in this business given that it’s a results-oriented industry.

Maloney, rightfully so, has taken a ton of heat based on his disastrous interviews and it begs the question as to who’s really in charge. I take it as a good sign that Conroy is being extended but I hope that his decision making isn’t hindered by an unneeded bureaucratic role.

Even if they are adamant about keeping this role, I think it’s safe to say they have the wrong guy in Maloney. It’s mind boggling how he got elevated to “boss” status given the minimal role he played in the organization before assuming the role. This hire was a favor to Tre and he then assumed the reigns even though his career as an executive has been very underwhelming. Hopefully ownership realizes this and decides to move away from Don (who am I kidding though, they will probably give him a 5 year extension…)

If Conny isn't aligned and is trying to rebuild and Don won't let him, firing Don will help the team because this team needs star power and you get star power by tanking and drafting high.

I think Murray left the Flames to work for the Flyers. Not sure if he's still with them or not.
