On November 24, Parks Canada received a report of an incident involving a bear in Yoho National Park. A trail runner on the Tally Ho trail near the Natural Bridge Day Use Area encountered a bear. The bear charged the individual and made contact with them.
The runner drove themselves to the Golden hospital where they were treated for minor injuries and released.
Parks Canada wildlife specialists responded to the area immediately to investigate the incident.
Based on interviews with the person involved and the initial investigation, the incident appears consistent with a defensive response by a grizzly bear during a surprise encounter.
A formal area closure for the Tally Ho trail and the Natural Bridge Day Use area have been implemented while wildlife specialists continue to investigate the area.
This is an important reminder that Yoho National Park is bear country — visitors must always be prepared and bear aware even during cooler months. Bears can be encountered at any time and in any place, from busy trails near town to remote backcountry sites. While bears generally avoid people, encounters can happen.
Parks Canada reminds all visitors to:

✅Never feed wildlife and always dispose of garbage properly
