Yan Kuznetsov - what a pleasant surprise
I am LOVIN this guy. I was all aboard team Solo before and was quite pissed with him going on waivers. But I know he and Yan were very similar players and I had no idea Yan could be this good. Seems like a super stabilizing presence, not an exciting player but a “makes the smart decision every time” type player. The fact that it is looking like 1 of those 2 guys could really pan out for us is awesome. It’s pretty rare for an AHL D guy to be dropped right into a top 4 role and not see any drop off at all. Color me impressed.
You start to see the top 6 of the future looking quite good:
Parekh, Bru for the offensive talent
Bahl, Kuznetsov for the defensive talent
Weegar for the veteran presence
6th spot for whoever rises to the top: Bean,Pachal,Mews,Morin etc

I'm impressed also with Kuznetsov.
But that future d-corps you have listed is not championship caliber. This team needs to not settle on mediocrity and we need to shoot for the next Hughes/Heiskenen/Werenski/etc.

Hopefully we have that in Parekh. Time will tell.

Parekh & Bru are still too new and raw to say that they can't be one of those. Time is needed.

sure but Kuznetsov should give us some perspective as he turns 24 this season and is just now starting to show at the NHL level.

Correction: he is finally getting an opportunity to show at 24. Prove to me that he wouldn’t have been good 2 years ago.

Solovyov still with only the one game played in November (the 1st) and doesn't appear on their injured list.
Many/most liked Kuznetsov's play better in camp. That might be coming through.

He has shown steady improvement in the AHL year over year...he is obviously a better player for his time in the AHL. Like do you have to be negative about absolutely everything? Please don't ruin the one positive thread on the site, thanks.

I was looking forward to seeing him graduate from the Wranglers, but didn't expect him to win a permanent spot on the second pairing this year.
Good job.
Still hoping we can claim Solo back on waivers.

Speaking of Solo his last game was November 1st. He would have been FAR better off in the AHL and not claimed to sit in the pressbox. Should be some kind of rule about playing waiver pickups.

This is why you give your kids a shot (a proper one). You dont know what you've got until you see them in action.
Brz, Grushnikov, Stromgren and even Frk (though needs a contract) could also use looks at some point.

I think Frk would cause a Dryden Hunt level melt down on here.

Some players just have a game better suited to the NHl than the AHL. Felt Kuznetsov was one of those guys. Hopefully he keeps it consistent.

I could take it or leave it. But even flames media are hyping the idea of a look-see for the player.

I was actually very worried we were going to lose him on waivers this year, so I'm very happy COL picked Solo. Kuznetsov plays a simple game, but he doesn't make many glaring mistakes, and has just been solid out there. He is just using his size and his stick well. He also does a very good job at clearing the front of the net, which is something the Flames have been missing on the Weegar pairing.
IMO he looks a lot more polished devensively compared to some of the previous AHL graduates in Andersson, Valimaki, Kylington, Solovyov, Mackey, and Kulak. I would argue that he even looks better than Hanifin in his first year playing for the Flames.
Finally, There's actually room for him to grow offensively. I could see him elevating his game by skating out the puck to lead a rush, and finding his shot similar to Zadorov.
