I'll give you the Floyd, the Who lost their way after Who's Next or they would for sure be on the list (and maybe should be anyway) Aerosmith were just a successful bar band that made a fortune copying the Stones, I'm not sure they are even the best Stones cover band frankly, I'd probably give that to the Black Crowes

easily the most influential punk band but they never took themselves seriously like the Banshees so never get the credit they are due

'is she really going out with him?' Best rock intro full stop

They were all fairly big songs...also:

Their last album was just covers. Renegades of Funk even has its own wiki page:

Edit: to be clear. I don't think RATM is the best rock band ever. I'm barely a casual fan and was just trying to clear up the misconception that they had a limited number of notable songs.

Is Yes a supergroup?

New Pornographers are a supergroup with staying power.

I think we need to have some kind of discussion about definitions here, to me 'best rock band' has to mean a band that has both a catalogue of great individual songs and albums over a length of time, kind of like a dynasty in sports, I love the Sex Pistols and think 'Bollocks' is one of the best albums of all time but they lasted 3 years and only really made that one album, counts them out of 'best band' ditto Nirvana, just not round long enough to tell

I don't know RATM individual songs well enough to know if they check these boxes although the fact I don't know them that well tends to make me think they don't, I know what their albums look like, I know who's in the band, I know what their songs sound like but I can't tell one from another to save my soul frankly, I'd nominate the Beastie Boys before them any day of the week

^^The Go-Go’s are in the Hall of Fame based on only three 35 minute albums. I agree there should be more longevity and a big catalog of work.

Billboard Magazine lets you vote on this very subject. Spoiler: currently The Beatles are in the lead and it’s not even close

Probably Zeppelin, but I do like the Black Keys if I'm looking at this millennium.

The longevity/big catalogue argument doesn't hold for me. The Jimi Hendrix Experience have three albums in 18 months and that's it, but I ain't even remotely considering Aerosmith better (or even close for that matter) cause they had 15 albums in a 40 year career. Peak > Longevity

The Beatles are objectively the best by any metric, even if they aren’t a favourite.

Black Sabbath would probably be in the conversation for top 3 in terms of influence and cultural impact.

These debates are always so emotionally driven. In the end everyone likes what they like and there really isn’t a right or wrong answer.

That being said the “best band ever” is probably The Beatles even though they aren’t my favourite band(though I am a fan). For no reason other than they likely have the overall highest ratio of people who like them vs don’t like them.

Edit: wrote this while Pepsi made the above post and lol’d when I read his post

If you include pop under the banner of rock then it's the Beatles hands down. If you start to exclude sub-genres like metal and punk it becomes more interesting. In that case I still say Zeppelin.

Of course this is all subjective. As long as people keep that in mind this type of thread can be fun.

A lot of that comes down to the age of the board, though. I like bands like the Stones and the Beatles, but they're also from a time before mine. While bands like Foo Fighters, Nirvana, Beastie Boys, and Rage Against the Machine (and the list goes on) were putting out great music when I was growing up, I was having a great time! So, yes, those other bands are great, and I understand why someone would think they're amazing, but I gravitate to the ones that have had a more profound impact on my life.

Rihanna and Michael Jackson have sold more records.

So I guess they aren't the best by 'any metric'.

The Beatles to me are to music what Star Wars is to the cinematic arts.

Best rock band?
Easy, it's the Supersuckers.

If you don't like the Supersuckers, you don't like rock and roll.

Need proof?
https://supersuckers.com/records/how...-in-the-world/
They put that album out 25 years ago and they've only gotten better.
