I have more confidence in our front office and scouting right now than I have in years. But Maloney is shaking my confidence these past few days. I just hope he isn't at the controls because he's a disaster.

One thing that has been confirmed for me over the past handful of days is how much I dislike Don Maloney. He is a terrible spokesperson for the team and delivers one of the most tone deaf interviews on TV then puts even more trash in print.
This reminds me of Feaster telling TSN to “write it down” because they were making the playoffs. Over a decade ago Feaster joked about making the playoffs the year after Iginla was traded and that he can’t say the word rebuild. The fact this is rearing its head again is one of the reasons the fanbase is up in arms an pointing their fingers directly at ownership.
I can’t think of a single team that has done what the Flames are trying to do which is take a mediocre roster, stay in the fight, and somehow build a contender.
Wow, Maloney sounds like an out of touch dinosaur in that interview. In one breath he is openly critical of the value of a top draft pick, smugly dismissing the “fantasy” of getting a top player, then later in the interview speaks to how hard it will be to trade Rasmus for a coveted top 3 pick. One of the poorer interviews I have seen an NHl executive have in recent history.

I guess the issue is still - is that what they are actually trying to do, or are they gaslighting about being competitive and verbally riding the fence on every issue. I still think it's the latter.

Maybe but they have just done a terrible job with PR. I can’t think of a single fan I know that would have listening to that interview and ate it all up. It produced more groans and eye rolls than it did build confidence amongst the fanbase.

I don't really care about PR, and I am certainly not pinning anything on what a POHO says in an interview. I've seen too many examples of teams sayng one thing and doing the opposite (players too for that matter).
Maloney hasn’t said anything different than what Conroy or any other member of the Flames has been saying for the last two years. Their plan is to continue to get younger, while setting a culture of hard work and being competitive.
He can’t go to the media and say we are throwing in the towel on this season, that’s just not feasible.
I think the biggest issue is that Maloney made it sound like winning this year is priority over getting younger or getting a high draft pick, but I don’t necessarily think that that’s what he meant to portray.
Maybe. But he had two cracks at it. And on the second one, he had a chance to prepare and correct. Instead, he went further in the wrong direction.
"He's always a name that comes up," Maloney said. "Keith Yandle is a very important part on our team, and he's a good player. He's been a top offensive defenseman for the last five years in the league. I'm not actually out there shopping his name around at all, but people have talked to me about it. I'd like to build that base, not subtract from it. "We don't have enough Keith Yandles".

The only rational explanation I have his interview is essentially keeping the rest of the league GMs on notice that the Flames are not going to sell their assets for pennies.

It is almost like Maloney said one thing publicly on Yandle and did something completely different later on.
