Just read the report on TSN. Brutal. I did not expect that.

We finally get a decent prospect pool, and the hockey gods are just cutting them down one by one.

Poirier- came out like gangbusters with 7 points in his first 4 games of 2023-23, then major injury, hasn't been the same.
Stockselius- cut by a skate blade, but should return to normal.
Mews- excellent freshman season in the NCAA, then season-ending surgery.
Honzek- season-ending surgery
Suniev- only 5 points, and a -9 in 17 AHL games.
Misa- WTF
Basha- one of most talented youngsters, slowed by injuries.
Morin- one of the best two-way D in the CHL the last two years, decides to suck and ignore his fitness.
Bell- no points, and a -5 in 12 games.
Sergeev- toiling in the ECHL.

I guess to balance it out, there are others who are vastly exceeding expectations, such as Jamieson and Wyttenbach- but still....

Yep. This is why you need pure volume.

18 picks in the last two drafts, plus they traded for some prospects as well.
Need to keep doing that year after year until the roster is just bursting with talented young homegrown players. Some that you thought would be there won't be, and some will come out of nowhere and surprise. And once you have an overabundance of these players you can lock some of them up as your core going forward, and others you can flip for yet more picks and prospects. Keep that cycle going, even through contention.

This is clearly part of the Swedish influence of the Anti-Slovak incursion for NHL roster spots!

It’s really coming down to scouting and pick the right players

A lot of them look great at lower level but have deficiencies that prevent them for succeeding at the highest level

Sutter on Morin:

It's nice to get Etienne in a couple of games in a row here after coming back up. He has had a great attitude. He's trying to work in the gym, and get better every day, being a sponge, and I give him a lot of credit for it. So it's awesome to get him in a few games and I thought he held his own, which is great
I think he turns things around sooner rather than later.

No prospects are linear.

Good to have a lot of them so you don't have to live and die by the missteps of one teen ager.

With that in mind, Honzek must have wrestled with his options before deciding it would be detrimental to postpone the surgery and try to play through the pain.

“I think he thought about us, as well, and not just about him,” Huska said. “Which is something I’m pretty proud of him for.”
Quote:
“I think he’s in a different space now because of the maturity that I’ve seen change over the course of the year where I think this is just going to catapult him to another level, because he’s going to be bigger and stronger again when he comes back. His speed is not going to change.

“And I really do feel now that he 100 per cent believes he’s an NHL player. He knows the role that he is going to be playing. He knows how he needs to play every night. So I think he’s going to come back and be just fine, once of course he gets the rust off.”
Quote:
“The size and speed that he has is what every team wants,” Huska said. “Now, it’s always about coming back and proving your worth. There’s no question about that. We expect him to push like he did this year for us, when he got into our lineup.

“But I think he has the tools and I think his maturity now has changed to the point where I do believe he’s an NHL player.”
