Garrioch specifically mentioned Blake Coleman as being a fit for the Sens, who will look to make a splash in the trade market.

The Sens have been looking for a Coleman type player for about 2 years now, so that makes a ton of sense.

I did reach out, and while I expected nothing crazy in terms of details out of respect etc, I did get the following:
"Very much still Craig's team"
"Hanlon's stepped in a bit on this one"
"Fully expects movement, its not if its when"

They don’t have a lot that is interesting
Obviously Yakemchuk would be great but that seems a reach
Hensler?

You took the words right out of my mouth, Jiri. I don’t think there’s any chance they would part with Yakemchuk. Hensler maybe, but I doubt they would do it for an older player like Coles. There’s Ridly Greig, but not looking like anything more than a third-liner these days…

Feel bad for Hanlon here, being such a good communications guy. Absolutely sucks to have to clean up your boss’ mess.
Who knows, maybe the media and the season ticket holders turning on Maloney will be exactly what this team needs.

You could eat half of Coleman’s salary and take MacDermid off their hands and their 2027 1st and maybe even something else since that trade basically only adds 1.3 million to their cap for the next 2 seasons.

I mean, as much as you can feel sorry for a guy in an absolutely prized position…
Hard not to feel a bit bad for Maloney. Dude was out there blissfully tap-dancing on the frayed wires of Flames fandom’s collective sanity, completely ignorant of the boomerang laced in verbal shrapnel headed back his way.

Yeah for a team just coming out of a rebuild their prospect pool is kind of ugly.
Those Debrincat and Chychrun trades were just ugly for them.

Something about it just doesn’t sit right with me, and part of that is Francis’ claim that Maloney wasn’t aware how his last comments were received.
Even I didn’t think they were very controversial but knew the moment I read them how they’d go over. It’s one thing for Maloney not to know, and maybe someone warned him and he ignored it, or people did know and just didn’t warn him?
There’s just no way nobody in the org saw the reaction play out this way. When you’ve got Francis throwing them under the bus on team-owned radio and even Steinberg voicing serious concern you’ve totally screwed up.

Perhaps Maloney put his foot in his mouth, and when his subordinates (remember, they're all under him on the org chart) spoke up about it, said something like, ‘Don't tell me how to do my job. I can fix this’ – and proceeded to jam his other foot in his mouth. Nobody besides the owners themselves had the authority to stop him.
To my eye and ear, he looks and sounds a lot older than 67. I honestly wonder if he has medical issues that are affecting his judgement.

Maybe Halliday + 2nd?
Halliday could turn into a center that plays a style similar to Frost. His playmaking was always pretty good, if the Flames could improve his skating like they did with Coronato and Zary then he's going to be a good one. He is 23, and the Flames would have 2 years before he has to go through waivers, but I expect him to stay in the NHL. If the Flames move Kadri or Frost this year then he would be competing with Zary for the 3C/PP2 time IMO.

Depending on what else is being offered, a 23 year old Greig isn’t the worst return for Coleman.
Consider that we will likely need a C when we trade Kadri (which seems more likely than not). Still need to field a NHL roster. Local kid, and maybe he grows into a higher role here than he would playing behind Stutzle and Cozens. Put up decent offensive numbers in junior, and trading a winger for a center would be a win for our roster construction.

There is no point in rushing into a trade. I expect most of this gets wrapped up after the Olympic break.
|
Agreed.
This is one of the parts of a rebuild that just sucks. The flames and the fans just have to be patient and wait for the market to materialize. There may be one or two teams at the moment who are expressing interest in Kadri, for example. By the deadline that could be four teams. Further the Flames don’t have to trade Kadri or Coleman this season. Andersson’s another story. The moment you get a package you like and Andersson can’t/wont block it, you pull the trigger. That deal can/should happen as soon as it can at this point.
As frustrating as Maloney’s comments were, I can appreciate the organization not throwing in the towel at this point. Maintaining a competitive culture/environment should be a non-negotiable for the organization. The teams that do bottom out for 1-2 years, opposed to 4-6, do this and I think that is the needle the Flames are trying to thread.
I think they’ve positioned themselves to bottom out this year and, probably, next. Come 2027, I’ll bet they’ll be wanting to start to climb back up the standings.
Just how I see it.

Oh, I buy it. People can be pretty blind and or pigheaded to how things come across. Especially old guys like Maloney. I know lots like that.

Ottawa is traditionally a team on no trade lists though. Kadri might do it but Coleman is less likely to waive for them. Remember he has a 10 team trade lists. Chances Ottawa is not on that list? pretty high.

We need to reach higher than a Greig, unless we are content to try and stay relevant instead of falling to the bottom of the league.
Try and get Greig types over the next few years by signing UFA's to 2 year deals for more money being offered elsewhere.
We need draft picks, plenty of draft picks.

Garrioch still around?!?
Also, that’s a hot take, “really good veteran energy guy that has won Cup and is on a great contract, would look good on the team I cover.’
If Flames move on from Coleman, there will probably be a 5-10 team bidding war. With retention he probably returns more than Ras as a rental.
