I'm prone to over-reacting when it comes to the Flames. So I have to check myself and remember:

Maloney is just an old man in front of a mic.
Conroy is absent because he is cooking big things.
Some of our coveted vets will wind up on new NHL teams over the next few months.
Flames will be flush with picks and prospects to be excited about.
Flames will draft exciting talent early in the 26 and 27 drafts.
Edwards is hands-off and his investment is appreciating in value rapidly.

But yeah, if Maloney is expressing the true intentions of the team, and Conroy is being phased out, and we get no rebuild, I will give away all my Flames gear and follow a different team.

I didn't realize this was a new interview. Jesus this is way worse than the last interview, can you please just shut up Maloney.

Referencing the Dallas model of getting lucky with draft picks and talking about culture over getting higher picks? We are absolutely cooked guys.

It's probably true that a real bottom out rebuild would see a drop in gate sales and season tickets. But it's also true that constantly being a mushy middle non-factor, never doing anything of significance, will also hurt interest. It might be a slower burn, but also probably harder to recover from.

I wonder if we can get a "sell the team" chant going tomorrow. I am dead serious, fans need to send a message to this ownership group.

It's so pathetic that the Flames think they can't rebuild, or think they have to lie about rebuilding.

####ing bizarre behavior from a bunch of grown men.

Yeah, the thing that I don't hear often is that the new arena will have its own momentum that will be added to the Flames.

In other words, just having a new building will provide a multi season lift. It will be hard to get tickets even if the team is struggling on the ice.

Add a couple of top five picks, and there will be plenty of draw.

It's weird that Maloney doesn't get this.

For many Flames ticket buyers, working washrooms and some non Soviet looking concessions are as much of a draw as a good team. LOL

Why would you need to draft top 3 to get those better players. The Stars clearly pulled it off later. So did Boston. They are already doing their absolute best to put the worst product on the ice, one would think that would count for something with team tank. Nobody who hopes we finish last really seems to care too much about what we get back for our assets, just that they leave the team so we can get that all important top 3 pick. Team rebuild is hoping that we get good picks and prospects back for the assets we have, that is the differentiating point I believe between team tank and team rebuild.

Is a "Fire Maloney" chant a possibility tomorrow night?

I'd go with "Maloney Balogny" personally

I'll reserve my judgement and reaction to what they do, not whatever word salad Maloney barfs up.

He's probably earned it. Multiple times through his career, actually.

Makes no sense he is still here. Too many cooks in the kitchen.

Maybe he is having flashbacks of his ARI failure and fans abandoning the Coyotes, and that is why he fears a rebuild?

This is not ARI. There is nothing else here to see in the way of major league sports. People will complain, but will buy tickets.

Take your medicine to get better, Flames!

Carolina who picked 2nd overall one year?

We are very poorly replicating a once in a lifetime strategy if that is the case.

This is exactly what I have been telling everyone they are trying to do for more than a year now while people like you (and you precisely) have loudly shouted that I am wrong / an idiot. So glad to see you changing tack to defend the approach now. Very consistent from you!

Worried too. I could see Conroy wanting full rebuild (most of his moves lean that direction) but Maloney and Edwards think otherwise. Will look really, really bad on the team if Conroy is not extended. Let him take the team in the direction he (I think) and the fans (most of them I think) want.

Maloney has several stakeholders to think about in an interview: ownership, sponsors, STH’s, the coaches, and the players. He cannot publicly say the team is giving up 20 games into the season. If he did, the players will check out, the coaching staff will stop taking the job seriously, and ownership would be furious, especially with a new arena coming and ticket prices likely increasing for a team that may miss the playoffs.

Everything we’ve heard from people around the team suggests the Flames are comfortable with this being a step-back year aimed at getting a high draft pick and building for the future.

Anyone who is upset about Maloney’s comments doesn’t understand how to manage the media, particularly this early in the season.
Your number one stakeholder is your fans. Rather than putting out a fire they do this Tone deaf.

Don’t quite follow what you are saying but yes I have said they have been rebuilding for 3 years now. They continue to rebuild. Team tank seems to be against team rebuild, which is fine. But I have consistently said they are rebuilding and they continue to do that. Team tank seems to be against a rebuild.

If you are continuing saying they are not and have not been rebuilding then I will continue to shout (as much as someone can shout on an Internet forum) that they are rebuilding and have been for 3 years now.

I do tend to agree that you can't just force young players into the lineup before they are ready but I disagree with pretty much the rest of this strategy laid out by Maloney.
