Maloney is not a good speaker. That being said I'll try not to overreact until the deadline.

If Kadri and Andersson are not gone by the deadline, I'm checking out completely on this team for a while. And I have watched every game, every single season since I can remember. But if those 2 are not traded signaling a rebuild, I'm out for a while.

It's just not worth it to cheer for a team if they won't commit to doing what is needed to win. And those 2 players being traded would at least signal that the team is committed to building a contender.

This is all starting to remind me of the Kevin Lowe years. Might just be best for the Flames brass to not say anything for a while.

Has Maloney every contended for the Stanley Cup?

It seems he caught lightning in the bottle once in 2011–12 and reached the Western Conference Finals.

On one hand, if this were the president of hockey operations for the oilers saying these same things 15 years ago we’d all be having a field day with it and photoshopping Maloney’s face on the Muhammad Saeed al-Sahhaf meme. On the other hand if that’s the type of people in charge of the team, we’re going to end up in the basement for years despite their best efforts.

Thought you were specifically commenting on me, my bad.

I think there’s a good amount of criticism to toss out though. Maloney doing these interviews is clearly not going over well for the Flames - so that begs the question, why are they doing them?

Is this some sort of plan to insulate Conroy from the “failure”? If it is, touché…but I don’t think anyone in this market is really sitting back and looking at Conroy with the stink eye.

Conroy is also well loved and has history here. I don’t get why they’re marching Maloney out there…unless it’s really just to create distance from Maloney (failure) and Conroy (golden boy who through his actions will be rebuilding this).

This was the damage control for the rebiggle interview. Oof

Hopefully these guys are better at building a hockey club than they are at communicating and building trust with their customers.

The good news is they will probably suck and draft high no matter what they do. You just kind of wonder who will be in charge a few years from now though.

I see a dude (Maloney) trying to take focus off the on ice talent with these interviews.

Problem is, it doesn't matter what he says, he's a giant turd and speaks like one. So people will and have reacted negatively to his appearances.

Plus, he's never really had a good track record as a GM or hockey ops personality. I just hate that the Flames idea of putting out a fire is to throw out the most punchable face in org to try and do so.

Why do the Flames think they can avoid this hardship and still achieve success? What has this organization demonstrated that would give fans this kind of confidence in them?

Truly an unbelievable and embarrassing interview. Simply insulting.
Do you seriously not know what fantasy world means in the context of this quote?

Seriously?

You really don’t know what it means in the context of this quote?

Really?

Look, yes I am probably overreacting. That said...

Why should I trust a franchise that's been at best mid since 1989. You should be trying to instill some hope in a fanbase. If the only goal is to sell tickets, hope will do that.

SN: Is the narrative accurate that the directive from ownership is that there's not going to be a reset or a rebuild?

DM: No, I don't think that's accurate. We have a collective group here with Dave Nonis, Craig, myself, Brad Pascall, Peter Hanlon and we discuss how we move forward. We all want to win a Cup.
based on this selective quote it’s pretty obvious that a full rebuild is guaranteed!

If you could be guaranteed that you could get a superstar or franchise-level player every year I'm sure ownership of any team would say, ‘okay, yeah, we'll suffer for two or three years.’But we just don't think that's the way for us. We prefer a Dallas model, where they got Miro Heiskanen at three, but also got good players in the 20s, in the 30s.
This is part that bugs me. I agree there are no guarantees that you get a superstar in the top 3. However the Dallas model involved getting star players in the late 1st and early 2nd rounds. Simply getting better at drafting and developing doesn't guarantee you get those players in the 20s or 30s. And if you're that good at drafting, then you can get even better players in the top 3.

When you give a dumb interview, followed by an even dumber double down, there is going to be a fan reaction. It’s a total gaslight, so fans have every right to be upset.

I’m a lifelong diehard Flames fan, who is on team tank.

I’m not one to attend many games in person, so not exactly their target personnel. That said I do know some more casual Flames fans ( ie, just want to watch hockey/wins) who buy tickets and attend the games.

This “need to be competitive” for the new stadium opening to sell tickets never made sense to me.

In actuality you have a built in window right now that’s perfect for the tank.

People I know have purchased or retained season tickets because they want to ensure they have rights to tickets in the new arena. That is the shiny new object. And regardless of the Flames record the organization will sell tickets to that first season as people are eager to get in the door.

So you have two years (this season and next) where fans are going to hold on to their tickets, and an additional year when the new arena opens fans will pay the bigger bucks to attend and check it out.

If you still suck after that inaugural arena season. Then you might struggle to fill the barn.

So sell off now! If you are showing promise and on the rise for the first season in the new barn, you will keep interest in the fanbase and tickets flowing. And no matter how low you finish fans will keep their season tickets so not to lose out on the new arena opening.

And personally I’d be a lot more likely to open the wallet to see the second season of McKenna and other exciting prospects then going to watch 37 year old Kadri putter around the ice.
