A lot of people on CP said he wasn't that player anymore the year he got 49 points.
The money the team spent on James Neal is a red herring. They signed him in 2018 and traded him away in 2019. There is no possible way they could have taken into account, in 2018, that the 2021-22 season would be shortened because of Covid, that Gaudreau would perform poorly, or that he would hem and haw until the very last minute before rejecting an $84 million contract to play for less money closer to home.
Hell, there was no way they could even have known the cap would be flat after 2020. Covid did not exist in 2018.

Division champs, 111 points, 5th overall. Like are you for real? I mean there are lots of teams its hard to win the cup. Markstrom and injuries on D blew it in the 2nd round...they were one of the best teams in the league all year. Everyone wants a rebuild so bad...we will be lucky to have a team that good again, some of you didn't even appreciate it.

The Flames had 111 points that season.
That's not a Cinderella run (required)
They were very very good. Their goalie just went brain dead in round 2 (And Hanifin and Anderson were useless vs McDavid and Drais)

Charlie takes back Louise, and in ~6 yrs builds 3 chairlifts. $10-$20m a pop.
New lodges coming too.
Contrast with;
*Fernie, zero. Not even renovating the tired old lodges. No investments, albeit a few new ostentatious resort-cabins, free of annoying trees, adjacent to the overflow parking lot.
*Kicking Horse, catastrophic gondola arm failure. No investments
*Nakiska, status quo.
*Kimberley, vandalized Northstar lift, was repaired. Yay?
*Mt St Anne Quebec, Lifts were so poor maintained over years, many in disrepair that poor old Murray couldn't possibly finance it himself, so the kind Quebec government is covering half of the $100m
*Stoneham, jewel of ontario with it's newest lift only 28 years old.
And are you wondering why little johny and jane, don't love going to RCR resorts to play, like they used to?
Because RCR, started the movement of eliminating "jump"s in terrain parks almost 20 years ago. Surely, such a thing wouldn't be a cost saving measure
https://www.piquenewsmagazine.com/wh...-parks-2477664
Louise, Sunshine, Revy, Sun Peaks, Big White, Silverstar, are better equipped as major resorts to accommodate a family's ski destination needs.
Last couple years, the Vail Group (Colorado, Whistler-Blackcomb) owner, has been poking around, with interest in buying --- details muddy, at an agreement for all/some resorts.
I think I'd prefer the devil I don't know, despite all the poor publicity coming from EPIC.

I'm just basing my opinion off an interview with Guy and he said Johnny was really wanting to sign with us the summer prior but we low balled him. Now obviously that is one side of the story but seems like a mistake to not give him a contract given what transpired the next summer.

Yes definitely for real because mainly I was right.
You’re basically telling me that you would forego maximizing Gaudreau’s return in exchange for a one round playoff win. Maybe that’s why ownership is so afraid to say rebuild- because of fans like you.
They should have traded him. They were never going to win it if you had any objective lens. Honestly it was very, very obvious at the time. This is a good example of your bias clouding your judgement because I know you’re very smart.
Like, objectively they should have traded him. We have the benefit of hindsight now lol
As well it would have pressured him to sign and I think he would have.

Division champs in the weakest division in the league. They had Nieuwendyk, Fleury, Roberts, Otto, MacInnis and Vernon left from the '89 team, plus Robert Reichel and a collection of spare parts. And Reichel was such an anti-clutch player, they put his picture on milk cartons every April.
The '94 team was weaker than the '93 team, which lost in the first round, and that team was weaker than the '91 team, which lost in the first round. The particular way Vancouver won the series was a massive fluke. That the Flames lost the series was pretty much expected and dreaded in advance.

You're basically telling us that you knew in advance the team would lose in the second round of the playoffs and Gaudreau would walk for nothing – and therefore you would have been right to torpedo that whole season to get whatever you could for Gaudreau at or before the deadline.
I don't buy it.

111 point team is not hoping for a cinderella run...by this logic never go for a cup I guess. 1 team wins, its really hard.
Yet you expect another team, with about the same or less points...to trade a haul for Gaudreau as a rental at that deadline. derp. Thats like saying everyone but Florida should have sold at last years deadline. I was right.

One of us is derping thats true.
Looking back, what decision would have benefited the Flames more in January that year? Keeping Gaudreau, or (and this is key) giving him an ultimatum to sign or trading him. Knowing what you know now with the results?

Trading him to who? a worse team that you expect to pay a ransom as a rental. Again by your logic 31 teams should be sellers every single season. Awesome sport. Flames were the hottest team in the league in January...like your take is beyond stupid it was never realistic to trade him at that time.
Next you are gonna say the Flames should have drafted Pavel Datsyuk in the first round.
If a 111 point team isn't good enough to take a swing why even bother with hockey, Flames could rebuild for 10 years and not be that good.

You should try looking in the mirror and saying that.
You absolutely did not know in advance that the Flames would lose in the second round of that year's playoffs. You absolutely did not know in advance that Gaudreau would wait until the last day before free agency to turn down the Flames' best offer and decide to take less money from a worse team.
You are wrong and you know it, but you think hindsight makes you a genius. It doesn't work that way.

Actually looking back I was absolutely right. They should have given him an ultimatum. They would have either re-signed him or maximized value instead of watching him walk. That is objectively true.
Nobody ever knows if a decision will be correct. I was correct then. That doesn’t mean anything to anyone but I present it as a data point that the geniuses of CP are not always right about what they defend and prognosticate.
Also you should try sometime having some ideas of your own rather than just condescendingly talking down to people. I never see you much making any pontificating on what the Flames should or shouldn’t do. To then go belittle those that do doesn’t make you look as smart as you think it does.

If a 111 point team isn't good enough to go for a cup why bother watching or being a fan. I am 100% right on this.
Saying they should have done such and such with hindsight and no context of the time is the stupidest thing a fan can ever say. Again 31 teams should have sold that year by your logic. Avs were the only cup winner.
