That’s one of the reasons longevity matters, it’s very hard to keep playing at a competitive level as you get older.

What Ovy is doing at his age , and the era he played in , is nothing short of
Remarkable
Especially impressive when you consider that he's not exactly a workout warrior or doing any of that age defining voodoo strict lifestyle that Brady was doing.

Who knew cabbage and vodka had nutritional and age defying virtues.

They should rename a few awards.

Jack Adams -> Scotty Bowman
Lady Byng -> The Hudler
James Norris -> Lidstrom
Rocket Richard -> Ovechkin
Art Ross -> Gretzky
Selke -> Bergeron
Vezina -> Hasek
Ted Lindsay -> Lemieux

Now the question becomes whether Ovechkin can beat Gretzky for regular season + playoff goals. Looks like he needs 45 more after last night. Should be close and probably comes down to how much he cares to do it.

Or just respect the tradition and history of the league and the greats that laid the foundation.

I was against renaming of the divisions even.

If they go a couple rounds this season and he scores maybe 5-10 goals, then next season gets 35 goals, he'll be right there. Caps might go to the playoffs next year also where he can get a couple more.

God, I hope this is a joke.

Edit: oh crap. Sorry, I just realized I bumped this thread for that. I followed a link to it from a different thread and lost track of which was which.

Burnaby Joe got bumped!!

Quote:
Welcome to the top 10, Alexander Ovechkin.

The Washington Capitals star officially passed Hall of Famer Joe Sakic for 10th all-time on the NHL's points list on Thursday.

Ovechkin's four-point showing — which included his 33rd career hat trick — against the Montreal Canadiens brought him to 1,643 for his career, eclipsing Sakic's 1,641.

And the Russian machine rolls onwards...

How does he only have 33 hat tricks in 21 years? Gretz had 50 in 20.

I mean, it speaks to Ovie's insane consistency I guess. Still crazy though.

Ovechkin’s feat here is arguably more impressive, given the difference in eras and the differences in styles/types of goaltending…

I mean—the 80s were so wide-open, often with pond-hockey scores, and with goalies that looked like Ryan Miller without his pads…

It was a slow start for Ovy...and now he's still on pace for 40 goals

The NHL was much higher-scoring in Gretzky's time.

Since Ovechkin entered the league, the Capitals have scored an average of 3.08 goals/game. During Gretzky's time with the Oilers, they averaged 4.83 goals/game.

In fact, the lowest scoring team during Gretzky's time with the Oilers was New Jersey/Colorado, who averaged 3.26 goals/game. The highest scoring team since Ovechkin entered the league is Vegas, who average 3.22 goals/game.

Which doesn't immediately come to mind for me if someone were to ask me how OV went about scoring his goals. My memory tells me instead that he was streaky, could go 3, 4 maybe 5 games without a goal, but then he'd score 9 or 10 goals in the next 4 games, which I would assume would include a hat trick within those streaks. So yeah, the low hat trick count is surprising.

Because game scores were regularly 8-5 in the 80's.

Also, that was when Gretzky scored most of his goals. Ovechkin's scoring has been a lot steadier throughout his career – never more than 65 in a season, but eight other 50-goal seasons and another five 40-goal seasons. Gretzky started his NHL career with eight consecutive seasons ranging from 51 to 92 goals, but after his first three years in L.A., he never again topped 40. When you score that many goals in the earlier part of your career, you're bound to get a lot of hat tricks.

I know this is the Ovechkin thread, but looking at the career point totals, Crosby would probably be chasing 2000 if not for those few injury plagued seasons early in his career.
