Coronato - 1st rounder, sent down to start last year, brought back up and became impossible to send down.
Gridin - 1st rounder, totally in agreement with how he's being handled so all good there.
But time and time again this staff seems inclined to lean to older more conservative vets for smaller roles, spot duty or cameos over younger players. Kuznetsov spent 4 years in the minors before finally getting a look, Stromgren is 156 games into his AHL career and hasn't sniffed a rookie lap, Kerins is up and down, Morton isn't a baby but he wasn't able to beat out a largely ineffective Kirkland to start the year.
You can agree with preferring the low impact guys over the kids in call up situations but it does often come across as though young guys have far less of an opportunity to show they can play than the Rooney/Kirkland/Lomberg types.
|
Part of the thing is you want these kids playing a lot. You don't want them playing 4th line minutes. It is better for their development to be playing down on the farm in all situations, and a lot.
So for the most part, they aren't competing with Rooney/Kirkland/Lomberg.
Morton being the exception perhaps.

Not rushing players into the NHL is a big part of player development. Sure there are exceptions but you could look at countless prospects in the past that have gotten miss handled.
For example, maybe if Zary spent more time on the Wranglers he might have had more weight on his frame and possibly avoided career-derailing injuries.
Maybe a bad example but im saying there is more to learn in the AHL and having Gridin stew down there this year is a good thing. Let him put on some muscle and play lots of minutes instead of putting up 20 points this season with 12-14 Mins of ice a night on a team that rather play Backlund and Coleman on the PP instead of Zary who should probably be playing with Huberdeau

On an entirety different note, Brett Sutter said today on the fan that William Stromgren was the first name he volunteered for the call up when the flames called him.
Said he has had huge leaps in his development, especially this year, and just loves how he just keeps and controls the puck the entire time - especially in the hard areas.
Given this, I think it's only a matter of time until he gets a shot up with the flames.

It's not just Huska, the same posters will never criticize anything the Flames do ever. No matter whether it was the right decision. If Kerins was kept up these same posters would be happy about him playing and worshipping Huska.
It is funny because people accuse me of never changing my mind on things. But I was actually really positive about Huska last year, and changed my mind recently. Your posts helped change my mind too, it is almost like people should listen to the other side every once and a while and not jump on people like hyenas when you offer a different perspective.

Would like to see Stromgren get an extended look.
Big boy, he can skate and he's not offensively inept either.
Hopefully just a matter of time.

Enoch Root is one of the best and most rational posters on this site. I don't always agree with him, but he always has reasons for what he says.
You are consistently one of the worst posters on this site. Everything you post starts with the conclusion ‘The Flames suck and their management is incurably incompetent’, and works backwards from there to provide excuses for that belief.

It seems like they are taking a look at them all. So far Gridin, Morton (assuming he gets in), Kerins.

And you wonder why there is a bit of hostility when you routinely call me one of the worst posters on the site. Because I have a differing opinion than you and I don't always drink the Murray Edwards kool-aid.

Eh it’s probably more because you mock and deride some posters for having a different opinion and then turn around and do this whole victim schtick when the same happens to you, while still getting your shots in.
I appreciate the trolling effort but “Murray Edwards kool aid”? lol
Do you honestly think anyone but his most persistent critics on here think about Murray Edwards at all? Can’t remember a single time anyone has ever brought him up just to praise him but shoot your shot I guess.

No, I call you one of the worst posters on the site because you are relentlessly negative about everything, and regularly resort to insulting people instead of making arguments. You have a long, long history of doing both those things.

I’m not sold on kerins like some of you. I’m more excited to see Morton because I think he could fit a roll as an everyday nhl 4th liner.

Morton is a RFA next year but then is UFA eligible after that. Time to figure out if he is worth signing to a multi-year deal this upcoming off-season.

To try to get things back on topic a bit, I still don't really get sending down Kerins now.
I think you could have easily kept him these next three games, then if you wanted to maintain waiver flexibility and have a different look for the longer and tougher road trip you send him down on the 22nd after the Dallas game.
I get not wanting him in the press box long term but I think you could have had him and Morton up for the next 3 games, and then flip one of them out for Hunt if you wanted a different body for the longer road trip.
Sending him down after 2 games is not really fair to the player IMO.

Without really knowing why or what conversations were had it’s pretty impossible to know if it’s fair or not.
For all we know they told him and a few other guys they were going to rotate players in and out of the lineup over the next month. For all we know Kerins always knew it was going to be 2 games with another chance further into the season.
