2026 UFA class is looking brutal.

Makes trade chips with term like Kadri & Coleman all the sexier

I honestly never imagined Kempe would be an 80 million dollar player.

Seems like a lot for someone who's never been above PPG, but I know nothing.

Not sure if there's another team in the league with a worse long-term outlook than the Kings

Kempe is a good player who would probably score more on a more offensive team. He will be 30 when the deal kicks in. So he's maybe a touch underpaid the first couple years, about right for two after, but has 4 left at a pretty high price for a winger. It's maybe a mid deal at best

Could be really risky as I believe he plays mostly with Kopitar, who is retiring after this season.

If he played on a team like the Leafs who don’t play defence he would be a 90+ points guy. His numbers get hurt by playing a 200 foot game.

Ya I don’t know how a team that has Byfield, Clarke and Lafrerriere in their NHL lineup and Greentree in their system can be worse than either of the two you mentioned, let alone at least 5 other teams.

That is a good point. A winger is often only as good as the dishes he's served.

I never realized what bad shape Toronto was until the trade talk heated up about them.

GM's will always find a way to shoot themselves, and all other GM's, right in the foot! Or maybe somewhere more painful!

Being an old man, who often yells at clouds and also people on my lawn, I have a really hard time seeing the upside of these contracts, and positively accepting many of these mid-range contracts over the past little while.

I think GM's make deals like this knowing that there's a good chance they won't be employed by the team at the end of the deal. He's been consistent 30 goal scorer for them over the last four seasons and they can't afford to lose him but I don't see this one aging well. Things will probably come to a head at the end of the decade where the entire league is full of overpaid 35-40 year old players.

I'll echo I never thought I'd see the day a 2nd line forward who's never hit a PPG is almost making 11M a season - Wild.
