I’m having a real hard time selecting what console to get for the family for Christmas. They currently have a switch 1 and Xbox not sure what level.
We don’t have need for blueray. We are leaning towards the switch2 kids are 12,9,7 and nobody is really a die hard gamer yet. We don’t really want to drop 700 for this thing to collect dust but nobody seems to have a favourite system so can’t decide what to buy.
Unless you bought the Xbox for yourself before the kids came around, the Xbox is very likely Xbox One generation given that it and your oldest kid are the same age. In that case, their entire catalogue of games will still be usable on the new Xbox console (if they've got game discs then make sure you get a version with a disc drive).
They're getting toward that age where they're probably going to want to play the sort of games that simply aren't going to be on the Switch 2. But then again, if they aren't die-hard gamers then they might be totally fine with a Switch 2. And again, almost the same as the Xbox, the Switch 2 has near-complete backward compatibility with Switch 1 games (there's a few caveats), so either way, you won't lose out on the games you bought for the consoles.
So at risk of spoiling the surprise... ask them? Either bluntly or be sneaky about it and fish it out of them.
Help needed for a console newbie: if I buy a Playstation 5 to play games like Madden, NHL, etc. is it possible to have multiple "profiles"? I just know my six year old is going to want to play and I'd rather keep his settings/career separate from my own. Also, is the basic Playstation 5 still ok or is it reaching a point where the Playstation 5 Pro is needed?

Yes to multiple profiles and basic is more than fine, especially if you are playing Madden and NHL type games

I wouldn't say Xbox is giving up, I think Xbox is just going with where the industry is going - towards exactly this.
Steam and Xbox are going to be similar.
I do find the positivity around the Steam Machine, and the negativity around the Xbox (which will likely be a higher-end version of the Steam Machine) to by...typical of the current climate around the Xbox brand.
The industry is changing.

As a dedicated Sony guy, the absolute perfection of the xbox stick position has killed me for years.
I've always preferred the Playstation layout. When I hold the controller my thumb naturally rests where they put the stick, and any game that requires both sticks just feels better when both thumbs are on the same plane

Are there any Xbox fanboys left these days, let alone ones who would drop $80 on a pair of ugly crocs? Microsoft really will throw the Xbox name on anything these days
