I would do this deal
To Leafs: Andersson + Van 3rd
To Flames: Cowan+28 1st
If the Leafs unprotect the pick then 50% retention for Rasmus.
Cowan gives the flames another 2023 1st which would give them 3 straight drafts with 2 1sts and another 2 in the future with 26 and 28.
Treliving did not draft Cowan as he was the GM that walked in around draft time (he couldn’t be at the table until the flames picked) I feel like he would move him before Danford.

The 2028 pick has implications. The 2027 pick that went to Philadelphia for Laughton was top 10 protected. Flames may not be able to get the 2028 pick. I would still do it since I personally think that Toronto is about to go over the cliff in the next 1-2 seasons.

I do wonder if something like Carlo + Cowan for Anderson + ??? would be an option.
Maybe there is more to this Kerins call up than meets the eye too...he was a Treliving draft pick.
Carlo + Cowan for Andersson + Kerins?
|
I don’t love that as I am not sure the Flames will be able to flip Carlo for much at the deadline. They waived Kerins so deem him expendable so maybe they think they can rehab Carlo enough to get decent value and when you factor in getting Cowan it could be worth the risk?

I agree they look poised for a big drop by 2028. The only caveat to that is McDavid. If it’s true that he ultimately will want to play for Toronto, that could change the value of that 2028 pick. Imagine if Matthews signs a 2 year extension knowing they are going to get McDavid. All of a sudden the odds of that 2028 or 2029 pick being in the top half of the draft really drops off.

Quoting isn't working for me - but very true Stemit14. I hadn't considered this. Damn.

Toronto just isn’t a good trading partner to for rebuilding teams.
Add in the Murray vs Treliving drama and I just don’t see it happening.
Would cost double for CGY to trade with TOR
Not to mention there’s more teams interested that have far more to offer.

There’s a lot of stuff that floats around regarding Murray that isn’t substantiated, but this one about him having a grudge towards certain teams seems to have legs.
And it is so, so juvenile. Cutting ties to any team out of spite is a bush league way of doing business.

I think McDavid is prioritizing winning over everything else and I find it hard to see how the Leafs will be in a different spot than the Oilers in 2.5 years. They are already an old team. I suppose Matthews/Nylander/Knies is a better group than Draisaitl/Hyman/Nuge. Both blue lines are old and their goalies suck.
If McDavid prioritizes winning he will have a lot more attractive options to look at in 2 years. The Sharks, Hawks, Ducks, Mammoth, Habs. If the Flames were not their biggest rival they could be in the mix if they land McKenna but I could never see him choosing here.

For the longest time certain people would claim like it was fact that “Flames ownership refuses to retain on trades” they have since done that multiple times and for multiple seasons (Markstrom). I agree with you that there are a lot of unconfirmed reports of what our owners will or won’t do without any proof.

Apparently Cowan didn't play last night? This suddenly makes me more excited that this could happen.

Quoting not working for me, but I agree with Howard that it's silly to not deal with someone because of a grudge, but in the case of Treliving and the Leafs there really isn't anything we're missing out on here. As Royle pointed out there are other teams with better things to offer. I'd be annoyed at Murray if there was something the Leafs could do that he's holding us back on but there really can't be much there. They've stripped their picks and young guys down at this point.

Okay here is my completely unrealistic proposal that likely doesn't happen but it's fun to speculate about.
Leafs have supposedly been willing to move on from Carlo who wasn't a great fit and Buffalo was rumored to have interest in return for Peterka. https://thehockeywriters.com/maple-l...ready-peterka/
Then you have the Leafs having interest in Andersson, and Owen Power supposedly being unhappy with his role and fit in Buffalo (Dahlin and Byram forcing him to play his offside on the RH side).
Sabres were rumoured to also have interest in Zary for Cozens last year.
Trade 1: Andersson + Kerins for Carlo + Cowan
Trade 2: Carlo + Zary + 2026 2nd for Owen Power
So you turn Andersson + Zary + 2026 2nd into Power + Cowan.

Unprotected first (2028) & Cowan is a good starting point for Rasmus.
For a pending UFA, middle 6 D-man you can't expect more than a B prospect and 1st rounder. Since the pick is 3 drafts out, it needs to be unprotected as we won't likely see the benefit of the pick for 5 years.

Honestly I would be stoked with an unprotected 2028 1st. Throwing in a C+ or B prospect would soften the blow of the 1st coming with many conditions.
|
I don't see any way the Leafs leave their pick unprotected in 2028. That would be too reckless.

Healthy scratch for an AHL game, and no call up to the Leafs today.

It’s probably happening, just going to take 6 days for the 88 pages of conditions for the first rounder
