“My gut reaction is sadness,” said Dr. James Talbot, a former chief medical officer of health for Alberta.

“A lot of people worked for a long time to achieve that measles elimination status, and to lose it in one year because of a failure of government action … for a disease that’s totally preventable, it just makes me sad.”

Where’s a statement from our current CMO? Too scared to speak out like all of her spineless MLA’s?

Tylenol is never the solution when you can buy Tylenot for 1000x the price.

United Conservative Party members can pat themselves on the back for repeatedly getting Premier Danielle Smith’s government to put their wishes into action.

She has banned vote-counting machines, cracked down on professional regulators, restricted solar panels on farmland, added “medical choice” language into the Alberta Bill of Rights, and required parental consent for students changing their pronouns — all after the UCP grassroots passed policy resolutions at party conventions.

Later this month, UCP activists will bid to push the Smith government farther than ever at the annual meeting in Edmonton.

They want Alberta to place new restrictions in policy areas where Smith has, to this point, been reluctant to tread.

Rainbow or transgender pride flags
: ban flying them or any other non-official Canadian, Albertan or municipal emblems at government buildings, schools or universities.

Fluoride: stop municipalities from adding it to their water systems.

Abortion (that perennial third rail of Canadian politics): don’t publicly fund late-pregnancy abortions except when there’s “serious risk” to a mother’s health.

COVID vaccines: apply the recommendations of a provincial review the province has largely ignored this year, pause mRNA vaccines and educate the public about purported problems with them.

No ban on culling infected birds? Missed opportunity there.

Not surprised they want to ignore a provincial review on vaccines when it doesn’t align with their ideology. This perfectly illustrates why teachers don’t trust a complexity committee and wanted the money directly in classrooms.

The provincial review the article is referring to was the quasi science one commishioned by the UCP that wanted to put a halt on MRNA vaccines. For whatever reason, the UCP has been reluctant to follow through on the recommendations. The UCP base is now calling for them to revisit said review.

That review cost $2 million.

But your point still stands. Trusting this government with a review on anything would be catastrophic.

Why do these dumb mother####ers think they get to tell me what healthcare I can have access to? Why does it matter to them? You don't want a vaccine? Well congrats, you won that battle of idiotic malicious selfishness. Stay the #### out of my choices as I try to protect myself from your stupidity.

I've been thinking a bit about what actually could stop the UCP from running roughshod over everyone's rights.

Let's say the recall petitions get to the point where they have enough signatures, and the UCP decides they're going to vote to retroactively repeal the law rather than let themselves become to victims of their own legislation. What's the recourse -- hell, is there even one? Does it take full-on civil disobedience of citizens occupying the LAA chambers to prevent them from voting on it?

The suggestion that they could block municipalities from adding fluoride in the water supply especially pisses me off, Calgarians have TWICE voted this in now after already having idiot City Hall councillors remove it at our peril.

Pretty rich coming from someone that promotes mandatory vaccination requirements and has also supported the notion of denying or limiting healthcare access to individuals who were/are not vaccinated.

Ya, totally the same.

I wouldn't expect you to understand or be able to reason out the nuances of the differences, so I'm not going to bother even trying to explain them to you. Feel free to go learn yourself, though. In it's shortest form, though, one position saves lives and vulnerable populations through self sacrifice, the other sacrifices others through shallow selfishness. Not the same.

If you chose not to trust medical professionals, don’t go running to medical professionals when #### hits the fan and inundate a system that’s already strained by idiots who similarly chose not to trust medical professionals.

I wonder if there would be cause for the NDP to take it to the LG that public confidence has been lost in the government, and an election needs to happen to re-confirm it. Any precedence of that in the Westminster system? I agree, though. I don't think there is a lot to be done when you give people like this power.

*sigh* The unfortunate reality of wanting to live in a compassionate society is that even when complete f-cking dipsh-ts make decisions that negatively impact their own health and place unnecessary strain on the publicly-funded healthcare system, our society's mandate must be to provide care for them.

This is the case whether we are talking about a total dumbass who won't get their vaccines to prevent and/or reduce risk and complications, or we are talking about the heroin-zombies and fentanyl-folders that downtown is inundated with. These really are the same thing; both made poor decisions that led them to requiring care and a compassionate society must care for both, no matter how much of a f-cking pain in the ass they are. One got there by being too f-cking stupid and credulous to make good decisions, the other is probably a little more complicated than that, but they're both a drain and a net-negative on our society -- and yet, we must help them.

My point around that was that if our hospitals are overloaded in a disease crush, maybe the people who got us there shouldn't be in the front of the line. And if you don't believe in healthcare, wtf are you even doing? Go to your church or naturopath and get cared for the way you think everyone else should.

Or maybe as you put already, "stay the #### out of there choices" and "don't tell them what healthcare they can have access to."

This is why we have a healthcare system staffed and run by professionals who can actually make medically necessary choices and provide necessary services based on prioritizing needs and not based on emotional response/overreaction.

There are plenty of other examples. The people I see riding motorcycles with no safety gear surely never end up needing expensive medical care. And as a society we have a whole specialty surgical wing at a mountain hospital dedicated mostly to people who have screwed up their knees doing extreme sports. Then there's the people who smoke, drink, or eat too much - plenty of preventable publicly funded medical care there.

Also coming up is the mental health burden on the system from people who have let youtube and tiktok parent their children.
