Hey guys, I just watched Slap Shot last night, and it totally put me in the mood for some other great hockey flicks. What other Hockey / NHL movies would you reccomend?

Miracle. IMO the best hockey movie ever made. They cast for the most part real semi-pro and pro players so the hockey scenes would look great, and Bill Ranford plays Tretiak(at least doubles for him in action scenes, you never actually see his face). A guy I worked for a couple years ago was in this movie, and he said they'd have to do up to 30 takes sometimes to make sure each goal went down EXACTLY how it did in the game, the breakdown of the play, everything. They even brought in Al Michaels to do commentary again. You gotta respect that kind of preparation. Great story too.

Or if you're in the mood for a chuckle, nuthin wrong with a little Mighty Ducks 2

Mystery, Alaska is a pretty good one.

The Rocket was pretty good, if you're into the history of the sport.

For me, anything that doesn't involve the player skating with the puck up to the blue line on a breakway, stopping, and then taking a slap shot that goes top shelf with the goalie standing on the red line classifies as a good hockey movie, though.

The Rocket, Slap Shot and Mystery are good. Youngblood does well on the unintentional comedy scale. Look for a cameo of NHL tough guy Eric Nesterenko as Rob Lowe's Dad. Keanu Reeves as the french Canadian goalie is pretty funny. Jean Claude Van Damme's Sudden Death is pretty sad. And Slap Shot 2 is absolutely deplorable. The Mighty Duck movies are ok for kids. As is the Mystery of the Million Dollar Hockey Puck (starring a ton of the 70's Habs and broadcast legend Danny Gallivan). Roch Carriere's The Hockey Sweater is also a must see.

Happy Gilmore was awesome. I think it had enough hockey in it to be considered as an honourable mention at least.

Happy: "During high school, I played junior hockey and still hold two league records: most time spent in the penalty box; and I was the only guy to ever take off his skate and try to stab somebody."

Well The Rocket is worth watching just to see Sean Avery get owned

Not that that's uncommon in any old hockey game, mind you...

The rocket is an excellent show. I cant count how many times me and the boys have watched that one on the long bus ride home after a game. Really good show too if you wanna sit down and kill a few hours on a rainy day.

Slapshot is good, another bus fim classic, could probably say the entire movie line for line now. Pretty good at showing the typical side of pro hockey players, especially the ones in the bush *caugh* federal leagues. Little out there though.

Miracle.....meh. could of been alot worse with your typical america save the day story line. I think someone above said they used minor league players or something? false, they were guys from the UBC thunderbirds team and some of it was filmed at ubc campus. The thing i like the most about this film is it depicts the us style hockey stystem i.e. college is the ultimate goal unlike here where its jr and then the show. not a bad film, shows hockey players pretty close to what they are, not perfect by any means. Thers also a couple errors in the storyline...

THE BEST HOCKEY MOVIE im surprised no one has mentioned it yet as well. Young blood. is the best hockey movie, though far fetched like the others it does the best job at showing what actual junior hockey is like. I.e. billits, puck bunnys, crazy coaches who had about six seconds in the show and so on. A great flick any day of the week though.

I gurentee those that have seen this love it, those that havnt seen it yet. Rent it, buy it, steal it do what you need to do. I gurentee if you wanna watch a hockey film you will love this. I own it, unreal

Les Boys is also a good one. I think only the first one has been dubbed in english, but there are multiple sequels as well. Eagle eyed viewers will pick out Yvan Ponton of Slap Shot fame (he played Jean-Guy Drouin).

I thought "The Rocket" was excellent. Wish there were more historic, based on a true story, hockey movies out there. The CBC movie about the 72 summit series is also a must see. As well as "Net Worth" about Ted Lindsey's attempt to start a players association in the 1950's.

That was me who said that. I shouldnt have used the word pro, you're right, it wasn't pro players. My point though was that they cast guys who could actually play hockey, as opposed to casting guys like, say, Paul Newman, Adam Sandler, Emilio Estevez, etc for star power, even though they can barely skate.

Most of the guys in Miracle played either major junior or U.S. college hockey, including the main actors. I wasn't talking about just extras, I meant the main guys. Eric Peter-Kaiser(the guy I knew) played Mark Johnson, and he played for the Nanaimo Clippers in the BCHL. Patrick O'Brien Demsey played Mike Eruzione, and he played some college hockey. Nathan West played Rob McClanahan, and he was a goalie for the Plymouth Whalers. And yeah even the fact that they used UBC players as extras still makes my point that it's cool they actually used real hockey players, unlike most hockey movies out there. Which is why the hockey looks so good in that movie, as opposed to say, Slap Shot.

Anyways it doesnt matter, if you didnt like the movie then you didnt like the movie, I'm not gonna argue it. Just wanted to show that the fact it was actually college players as opposed to pro players doesn't make a diff in the point I was making

I thought Paul Newman skated just fine. The Hansons all played pro hockey, etc.

Now if you were talking Russell Crowe in Mystery, you'd have a point.

Forgot about that one, I saw it back in '95 or '96, whenever it first came out. Excellent show. Interesting to see how blackballed Lindsey became around the league because of all that, and the straight-up lying Jack Adams did to make it appear Lindsey was a bad guy.

Still haven't seen The Rocket, I bet I'd really like it, and I caught a small part of 1972, which looked good as well.

Never saw that one, haha yeah I bet its just poetry in motion watching him skate. I thought all Aussies were good ice skaters?

Sainters, you'll love the Rocket. I've seen it about 6 times now, love it every time. Being a Habs fan doesn't hurt, but it's just a very well put together movie.

Yeah I'll have to check that out. I'm a big history dork too so I'm sure I'll love the whole accurate 1950's layout as well.

Nobody has said Mighty Ducks? I used to be obsesed with that movie, I would watch the whole season of them in 1 day when I was a kid.

The whole season? Was there an animated television series as well? Or by season did you mean trilogy? If that's what you mean, a couple of people mentioned it, including myself(at least the second one; the cheesiest one of em all). I love how Goldberg is soooo out of position on every opposing goal that he actually has time to dive and yell "Noooooo!!!" as the puck goes crosses the line. Or how when Gordon Bombay "sells out", he starts slicking his hair back and wearing suits. Then when he "comes back down to earth", the kids automatically can see he's back to normal before he even says anything because he's parting his hair in the middle again and wearing his Mighty Ducks jacket. Ohhh the hilarity...

A 2nd vote for the "Les Boys" series.

I've watched them all in French, but I own IV and the box says that it has english subtitles. Brodeur had some hilarious bits.
