Nov.7th:

Green Bay defeats the Madison Capitols, 4-3 in a SO. Phillips returns, with no points, but gets a game-high 5 shots, and finishes +3. Excellent game for a defenseman of his ilk. 9gp/1g/2a/3pts,+7, 41 PIM.

Do you like Phillips quite a bit more than Boltman at the same age?
Seems like at the very least, Phillips has a better natural toolbox and drive.

I truly never understood the Boltmann pick, and why we picked him so early. I saw no upside there. At least with Phillips, he has a use- and I like him even more after seeing him play in training camp. There's a lot for him to work on, and he'll need an extra-long runway, but he could end up being a punishing, intimidating, bottom-pairing D in the NHL someday.

His training camp definitely got me hyped for this pick. He looked legitimately good out there, and earned a lot of accolades. Hopefully he can just keep taking steps forward.

I think the 'goal' for him would be to replace what Gudbranson/Zadorov were in Calgary - bottom-pairing defencemen that were steady and hard to play against. They are both awesome players, as long as they play on the third pairing. They were both much further ahead than Phillips was at the same age (obviously given their draft positions!), but I do think that if things go right, Phillips will be able to fill those shoes on the third pairing. Would be nice to have some size throughout the defence. Bahl on 1st pairing, Kuznetsov (if he continues to grow his game) on the 2nd, and Phillips on the third. With Hurtig and a couple of others, I think the Flames won't come out of the rebuild being too physically weak on the back-end. Nice options with skill and physicality, and the Flames are obviously going to be adding to this base in the next couple of drafts.
