Calgary hasn’t shown a huge willingness to weaponize cap space previously, although we don’t know what opportunities there have been.

But I was really talking about retaining on a player to help another team complete a trade. That’s what weaponizing cap space means to me.

Most teams haven't done that, and it's no longer really allowed under the revised CBA. The 75-day waiting period before the second round of retention is going to make those double-retention deals effectively impossible. Nobody is going to acquire a player on spec on the off chance that they might still have a buyer for him two and a half months later.
