Neal didn't suddenly become a lazy bum when we acquired him. Either we had/have very bad pro scouts that didn't do their homework on him, or they did and GMBT had a boner for a guy his scouts said we should stay away from.
James Neal is the root of the Lucic contract problem.
Lucic himself was not a problem, at the time we traded for him I (and many others) said he would become a fan fave despite his play decline and his bad contract, and he did.
Can't blame Lucic for blocking. It was his right.
Can blame GMBT for signing Neal, and turning him into a Lucic that had trade control on a retirement deal.

I distinctly recall the year Treliving signed Neal. The team was desperately short at RW, and Neal was the only one on the market who could score goals. He had, at the time, seven straight 20-goal seasons.
Neal was useless when not scoring goals; I think everybody knew that, Treliving included. But nobody expected his scoring ability to disappear overnight.

As I recall (But can't find it) there were some definite warning signs with Neal's play the season before he signed with Calgary. But yeah, free agent wingers were slim pickings that summer.
James Neal
David Perron (probably a better choice in hindsight)
Rick Nash (no longer the Rick Nash you remember)
Michael Grabner
Thomas Vanek

We've heard it a million times. Some times the deals you don't make are the very best of all.
Brad got impatient. Undid a lot of hard work.
He also over valued knuckle draggers. Guys who didn't really deter opposition from taking shots at Sean and Johnny (mostly Johnny's wrists as I recall).

Not to disrupt the Lucic talk.....
But if the Blues blow it up, and Calgary trades Kadri. That would make Frost Backlund the 1-2, and i would love if they picked up Toropchenko to add to a Zary and Klapka third line. Two 6'5 wingers who play with pace along with Zary would be really entertaining to watch.

I will never forgive Brad Treliving for losing Gaudreau to free agency and the fallout that happened with Tkachuk.
Conroy is a much better GM than Brad.

IIRC most underlying stats actually liked Neal. He wasn't a huge play driver but wasn't a liability like he ended up being.
Think it's just part of the risk of giving a guy that age a retirement contract.
In the end though I also think there was some intervention with that deal...I have heard there was a lot of insistence from Edwards to sign Neal and that GMBT wasn't actually the biggest fan. Once again just a rumor but I also heard it was a big reason Treliving pushed for full autonomy when he re-signed in 2019.

Not sure if already posted, but Pike says there will be 12 teams in attendance to watch tonight’s game.

I wish we could find out which teams haha. Interesting though. Ideally we see a 4-2 loss where Kadri and Coleman score assisted by Andersson lol

I think everyone should just wait and judge Conroy on what he actually has done and what he will do in the future. The only miss I think he really has so far is Andersson but being in the playoff race last year really killed his ability to trade him at the deadline.

I’m sure his plans changed drastically with the team unexpectedly challenging for a playoff spot. He did what he had to do- otherwise, we might be looking at a different roster right now.

Both St Louis and Calgary have danced the trade dance before. I wonder if a roster shuffle between the two would work for both teams.

100%. That team was a worse version of the roster that just finished 9th.

Would love that, Flames get a little older but would give the Flames two decent scoring lines and then the Backlund line. Might encourage Andersson to re-sign.

Yes I agree. A trade like that would be different from all the other picks and prospect heavy trades and could give the Flames some real balance in their top 9.

Give me whatever the 2025 equivalent of Joe Mullen, Terry Johnson, and Rik Wilson for Ed Beers, Charlie Bourgeois, and Gino Cavallini is.

Even later on, with hindsight, Conroy will be difficult to judge based on meddling from ownership.
It may be unfair to criticize Conroy for failing to make moves sooner rather than later.
