thats the problem with March - you think it is spring it is supposed to be spring but it is in fact not spring it is still winter. April (late) is finally spring where the weather starts to smarten up. March is a full blown tease, its wet and soupy and caught in a perpetual cycle of massive snow storms.

I took a quick look, and it seems to be around 50-50 if Jan or Feb have the coldest day of the year, and it's similar with days below -20. So that's not a differentiating metric.

March has some of the best powder ski days though, and that counts for a lot.

February as I said in another thread. Worst month by a longshot. So bad the Valentines day was thrown to perk up couples and throw commercial businesses a bone. That wasn't enough so governments threw in a made-up stat holiday for good measure to make it less miserable. Rivals January as coldest month of the year and most people just wait for the days to go by into March and the beginning of the thaw to warmer weather. It's 28 days because even the ancients hated the month and wanted to get it over with.
January sucks but at you at least start off on the right foot after Christmas and New Years festivities and the most depressing part of January is knowing that the next month is February.

April has the Easter super long weekend, so for that reason alone it can’t be the worst.
November, while boring is usually pretty mild winter weather, no long weekends but Remembrance Day which may or may not be observed (thank you elite military snipers for your service). A pretty unremarkable month.
February is brutally cold, family day is the lamest long weekend of the year, darkness going to and coming home from work, overall it’s a dumpster of a month. The best part about February in Calgary is leaving Calgary on vacation.
February sucks

I'm voting for February. January sucks but at least there is the promise of a new year, new possibilities. February is dark, cold and stuck in the middle between the holidays and a far away springtime.
This year we got smart and booked 2 trips to FL and 1 trip to Playa in Jan and Feb. I find the best way to deal with the dark and depressing weeks of Canadian winter is to get the hell out for a while.

Start off right? By January second everything before is no longer visible. Partly because is so ####in' dark. Nobody on January 8th is still running of Christmas glow. That #### is long gone. All you know is the one stat of the month just got blown on the first day and you don't even remember it, and there's nothing to look forward to in that regard until mid-fricken' February.

February for me. We don't get chinooks here but we usually get a few days of golf weather and then it gets really cold again. If we get a big snow storm it is usually late January or some time in February.
March has flickers of warmth and super changeable weather and you really feel spring coming and then.....
April is the second worst month. I swear when I moved here in 1993, April we'd start seeing leaves and flowers but that's almost always May now. It makes sense since October seems much warmer than it used to be. It's like the weather shifted a month in the last 32 years. April somehow seems colder than March, though I am sure it isn't.
But yeah, February is the worst because of the tease, but also usually the worst cold snap too.
November also sucks, but there is much more going on in the sports world so much more easily distracted.

November has no redeeming qualities. The weather sucks. Days are short. Skiing is often questionable. No fun holidays. No hope.
Tell me one positive thing about November...

Arguably you start January off in the worst possible way as the day after a party is always an absolute slog. Completely ruins the fact that it’s a day off.

December for me. Wettest, darkest, windiest month here. One extreme year (2015), we had almost 16 inches of rain, but still average is around 7. It's one of the few months where everything looks dead minus evergreens and Christmas is kinda meh.
April I can understand for Calgary, but here it's great. Everything is greening up, usually get our first several days of highs above 20C and wildflower season really ramps up in the Columbia River Gorge, so hiking becomes much more enjoyable over the dead winter months.

June is the worst!
It rains every time you want to do anything outside and you have to mow the grass every other day.

February is the worst. Cold, dark, and with only 28 days its never a 3 pay stub month.
