I think parekh not playing in the nhl this year is probably best, especially as it’s only going to become more and more of a tire fire as guys get traded out, and the losing takes its toll on the team’s vibes.

Can’t they loan him to a team in Europe or something?!??

Go preds!

Yep, the Islanders who many on here touted as "WORSE" than the Flames (lol) are playing Schaefer just fine, managed to find him top 2 minutes and PP1 time too.

But they've paired him with a veteran stay at home D man who can protect him... strange how things work everywhere else but in CGY.

Francis is more connected to the pulse of the team/ownership than people give him credit for.

The Flames have done the same thing, but Parekh hasn't played as well - is that Calgary's fault?

IMO, all this needs is a little patience - Parekh will figure it out, and get better as the season goes along.

Way too much hand-wringing around here.

I think junior is the best place for him right now. He is hands down our best prospect and I'd rather see him swim in the OHL at his age than sink in the NHL Gotta be patient with the kids and not force them in when they aren't completely ready. Maybe he figures it out in the NHL after 20-30 or more games, but the downside of him getting physically punished every night and hitting a wall right now outweighs him exceling in the OHL. Plus, he does have things to work on. He was far from criticism at the junior level in some aspects of the game.

As someone else mentioned, it would be a better pill to swallow if the exchange is seeing someone like Brz get a chance.

Yes, I know.

But both things can be true

Losing a year on his ELC isn't the worst in a world where he might not get a bridge deal after his ELC expires.

LOL

12 games into his career, and the Flames are focused entirely on his development

If i was Parekh's agent, I'd make it known that any contract extension is off the table if the Flames cheap out and send him back to junior.

Then his agent would be a colossal idiot.

The best dman in the NHL wasn't in the NHL until 20 years old lets not get crazy

that being said I wouldn't be shocked if he plays tomorrow, it is a back to back

I already have my pitchfork sharpened from the last Hunt callup. That one turned out to be a false alarm.

I'm also not happy that Morin only got into 2 games in the AHL. He looked like a pretty promising prospect, so I don't get why he played less games than Mack(assigned to Rapid City), and Ottenbneit. Maybe I'm missing something and he's injured.

Your definition of the "same thing" and mine are very different in this case.
I'd say the FLAMES haven't played well... Parekh has played better than 3/4 on the team which is saying something.

They have not given him anywhere CLOSE to the same thing as Schaefer of Buium, not even close.

Schaefer - 22:21 min / avg - 3:28 avg PP1 time per game - 8 PTS with 4 on the PP
Buium - 19:37 min / avg - 3:08 avg PP1 time per game - 8 pts with 5 on the PP
Parekh - 15:53 min / avg - 1:42 avg PP2 time per game - 1 pt

Schaefer has played primarily with Romanov and Mayfield
Buium started with Bogosion and has transitioned to both veteran D man Spurgeon and 2 way D Jiricek

Buium has been burned defensively just as much as Parekh, but offensively his team is a lot better than CGY playing on a stacked PP1 unit.

How is that even remotely close?

I feel comparing Schaefer to Parekh isn't a fair comparison, and I wouldn't assume that their development plan would really align. Scahefer was known as a complete defencemen with a high ceiling in both offence and defence. He controlled the game when he was on the ice in junior and the WJC (small sample there). This was what is basically expected of him.

Parekh is a high-offence defencemen that needs to learn how to play defence. To his credit, he worked with Edwards on it last year in junior, and I am sure he is trying this year. The organization is working with him on it, and will decide what is best for him given where he is on his game, where he is on his physical development, and whatever other factors they deem important. I don't for a second feel you can just compare him to any other defencemen and point at their respective organizations for 'doing it right' and then saying that the Flames are doing it wrong. People are greatly underestimating how good Schaefer was - there was a reason he went 1st overall even with the injury.

I just don't think it is fair to directly compare defencmen like this, especially when Parekh is the smallest and lightest it seems as welll, on top of him never being a defensive stalwart. This is why Parekh was drafted 9th - yes, some teams took a run on centers, but there were question marks about his ability to play defence, and part of that was his willingness to do so. In my opinion, he seems very willing. It is just a matter of figuring out how to best develop him, and I do think the Flames will do exactly this.

This is probably one of those awkward places to be as a GM when your coach and dressing room leadership still believe they can win every individual game but feel Parekh is not ready to contribute at this level. I think Conroy has to prioritize the player in this instance and keep him on the roster with reasonable deployment (doesn’t have to play every game).

Flames in Nashville. These games are always fun. No idea why but this building and these teams always deliver against each other IMO.

I'd prefer him in the NHL but he has been getting hammered and we aren't seeing what is going on behind the scenes. Talk about "wrecking" him is absolutely absurd in my opinion. He is a 19 year old dman.
