A group of us went camping last weekend and I thought for sure we'd come across one, given all the warnings and sightings going on combined with that time of year with bears feeding on all the ripe berries. First night at about 3am I heard some rumblings outside the tent for about 10 minutes. Thought for sure it was a bear, even with us being vigilant in storing all food/beverages in the cars and cleaning the site and taking out the garbage before going to bed.

Thankfully it was just my buddy stumbling outside puking from all the rum.

My friend’s Great Pyrenees used to run into the middle of Nose Hill and toss coyotes. They’d surround her and she’d start chucking them around for fun. Tough dogs.

I had an Akbash/Lab cross named Jet and he was ridiculously fast. I used to take him for runs with my side by side and he would run 40km+ for 30mins at a time, never seeming to get tired. His favorite game was getting chased by the coyotes and would end up with a half dozen on his tail running in front of our acreage. They would eventually get tired and give up then he would come home, it was pretty funny to watch.

That is close to my friend's farm. They have two giant dogs (I can't remember the breed) to protect their livestock. A couple of years ago their dogs (who are white) were all pink so they looked around and found a black bear carcass close to their barn. Usually they find dead coyotes but I guess the bear came too close to the livestock that year.

My buddy had a brother and a sister, Great Pyrenees. He told us a story of walking them, and a lone coyote came up to them, presumably to lure them back to the pack. They took off after it, and by the time my buddy caught up, there were six dead coyotes. I was never sure about this story; now it seems it was true.

Another quick story, I was walking my dog, a smallish terrier and we saw a lone coyote and he was scouting us out. I backed out of the path we were on and up the hill I could see the rest of the pack watching. Really creepy. This was actually right in town, near that bmx track.

Honestly the only part of that story that surprises me is that a coyote would approach a pair of pyrenees walking together. Seems like an obviously bad idea for the coyotes.
