Default 2025/2026 Season Other NHL Teams Thread

Couldn't find one of these threads for general discussion on other teams.

Leafs are about to get all the focus after the World Series finishes and the heat is going to be turned up real fast given how the team has performed, not to mention Marner in Vegas so far and how Matthews has started the season.

Auston Matthews has just 6 5v5 goals since February 1. This ranks 250th in the league.

Maybe he is playing through an injury. Also, it doesn't help to lose your best player and playmaker in the off season in Marner. It helps to have a guy like that setting you up.

Leafs miss Marner big time...this idea that you just lose your leading scorer and you are better because he got shut down by the Panthers in game 6 and 7 was always crazy.

McDavid and Drai also got shut down by the Panthers in the late games of series in back to back years.

I feel like injuries are catching up to Matthews.

His release doesn't look as deadly as it once was, his shot speed is down, and his skating speed is also down.

Bill Armstrong talks about the young guys they have coming up in the next few years with Frank. Feel bad for Arizona who never got to see any of this while the team was located there, only to now watch the team finally start breaking through elsewhere.

The Coyotes stocked up on picks by being the Publishers' Clearinghouse of bad contracts.

The Leafs had the opportunity to mitigate that loss by spending Marner's cap hit on players who would help them in other ways, instead of having a top-heavy team with four offensive forwards and a bunch of filler.

They missed that opportunity – badly. But the opportunity was there.

Kind of crazy that our leading scorer would be tied for 6th in Utah.

Interesting to see how quickly Treliving has damaged that franchise. Their D corp is old and signed long term, they have very little in terms of picks or trade assets and lost an elite winger. He was only able to salvage a depth forward to help make the transaction work for Vegas and avoid losing his second top 5 scorer in the league for nothing in a 3 year span.

Looking at the standings St Louis and Minnesota seem to be two other teams in team tank mode that maybe weren’t predicted to be there.

I doubt either team is interested in staying there - they are going to continue to try and be competitive. And while it isn't impossible (see NSH last year), I think both teams are too good to stay at the bottom of the standings.

The 3 teams that fought for the final 2 spots in the west last year now make up 3 of the bottom 4 teams in the league.

The Coyotes/Mammoth have been stockpiling picks for 10 years. Only now they're turning the corner, and that's if this streak lasts.

For all of Kypreos being criticized on here, I think he's pretty on point for most of his assessments on guys. Matthews may be on of the better stick guys to strip the puck from the opposition, but he's never been able to step it up when it matters in the playoffs. His comfort zone is the quick shot and stripping guys from the puck. It's never been to go through guys when he has the puck, or take the body. Marner was the same type of guy. A team can't have their top two guys with the same problem of not being able to go through guys. Marner had to go. They were in a tough position to not get anything for him (good for Tre). Simply put, Matthews has to lead by example and learn to go through people. He's a big guy who doesn't want to get dirty aside from his standing position. Skate to the middle with the puck and bowl over guys. Until he learns that (even on occasion), the Leafs won't go anywhere.
