Question about Windows Vista: I'd heard something about Windows Vista not allowing the playback or burning of ... well there's no sugary way to put it, illegally downloaded movies or TV shows and the like. Is this true?

Sorry if the question is out of place.

Vista works fine with downloaded content.

When you start talking about hi-def content like Blu-ray or HD-DVD discs, then issues may start cropping up, but right now nothing will is stopping you from playing what you download.

An issue may arise in HD-DVD or Blu-Ray discs, and even then after the DRM is stripped you can view the files . Unless there becomes some super intelligent software that can recognize a "fingerprint" of the media and recognize it (which isn't viable right now) then the computer can't tell if you are watching a file you made at your kids' after school dance or Bachelor Party.

Best sub $800, brand name (ie not Acer) laptop out there at a physical store right now?

Dell has Inspirions for $499...that would probably be the best deal by far, but far too impulsive to wait.

I was browsing and was ready to pull the trigger on an HP at Best Buy for $799...but thought I would sleep on it and do some research. Saw a open box for $100 less, but it was a previous model with Intel chip, not the AMD.
Very minmial standards 1GB Ram. 14.1 or 15.4 screen at most. Just for fooling around, obviously.

If no other suggestions help me pick between these:
Toshiba is 15.4
http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/pro...gon=&langid=EN
HP is 14.1
http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/pro...gon=&langid=EN

Cheers,

Why not Dell?

And I'd try quite hard to get a Core 2 Duo and not the AMD chip, it's far superior.

EDIT: And Acer makes pretty good laptops!

Actually, I've heard Acer makes some really good laptops and some really bad ones. It varies widely between models.

My desktop computer keeps shutting off after about 20 seconds. I cleaned out the whole thing and replaced the power supply but it still shuts off. I'm not sure what else to try. I also took off the heatsink fan on the CPU and cleaned it out.

You've covered the biggies - power and heat.

Is it happening before the OS starts to load?

I'm wondering if it may be bad memory - can you boot into DOS and run memtest86?

After a little more digging around is looks like my heatsink/fan weren't as clean as I originally thought. I took the whole thing apart, cleaned it up and applied some fresh thermal compound. Now it seems to be working quite smoothly and no unexpected shutoffs yet after about 30 minutes. Here's hoping it keeps going.

Okay, this isn't quite as much of a problem as it is a request for advice.

I've got a Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop, and for the first two years, I LOVED it. But since January I've had just one problem after another with it, and it's starting to get on my nerves. Currently the motherboard is dead, and I'm the idiot who didn't extend my service contract, so it'll cost me $498 to get it fixed.

At this point, with dealing with all of the people at Dell a few times today, just being really disappointed with their handling of the problem, etc., I just don't really want to deal with them again.

I have a friend who has been using Macs for years, and she swears by them. I've heard good things about them from other people as well, and I just wanted to get some thoughts on it here, whether you guys think I should just go ahead and move to a Mac or stick with a PC. Thanks in advance!

It all depends upon what you need to do with it.

Mostly just the basics. I want something I can play music on, something that I can use for internet access...I don't really need it for games too much, I think I own two computer games, I just haven't really gotten into them.

So basically music, some photoshop type stuff, internet, chatting...just basic use, I guess.

Does anybody know what could be wrong with my audio? Ive had my computer for almost a year now and it has never ever had any audio in Flash such as youtube. Could it be my audio driver? do I have to update it or something? Or I think I could download a codec or something. Anyone have any ideas?

Sounds like a Mac would be fine with that. I'd suggest you go with what you are comfortable with. If you want to try a Mac, there are many people around here very happy with them.

Doing a quick search, there are a few things it could be, but there are different solutions depending upon if you are talking Mac or Windows.

Assuming Windows, the solution seems to be a key missing from the registry. I'm hesitant to advise someone to muck around in there.
Here is the key. If you need to ask how to do this then you probably shouldn't try it (doing this can easily screw up your entire system).

Alright the problem is really the mapping of wavemapper in Windows registry as reported by one member of the forum. All you need to do is to open registry editor by going to Start menu, Run, typing regedit and then Enter. After that, in the registry editor, walk yourself through the tree in the left pane, till you reach

My Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Win dows NT\CurrentVersion\Drivers32

And then on the right pane, right click and click on New, select String value, enter "wavemapper" (without quots of course), ENTER, type "msacm32.drv", ENTER.

Close the editor. No need to restart. Video on Google and YouTube et al would work fine now.

So I want to move all my data from my old harddrive to my new one. I can open my computer, and that's about it. I have the ribbon attached to the old harddrive. What do I do now?

Please help.

I am trying to reinstall Windows XP on my Dell XPS. I am following the instructions included with my computer. I put in the windows cd in, restart the computer, hit F12 (boot screen) when the dell screen appears, select the CD-ROM option and hit a key to enable the computer to boot by cd (or something along those lines) then the windows start up screen (blue) loads and I am given the option of continuing to install windows xp or run a recovery or exit. Whichever option I pick the next screen says it can't detect any hard drives on my system. What's going on here? Clearly I have a hard drive because I am typing this on my computer. What should I do here? Thanks.

Is that the recovery CD's came with the machine?

It probably can't find any hard drives because Windows doesn't have the drivers for your hard drive controller built in (common for SATA drives). In some systems there would be a floppy disk included with the drivers on it, and when starting the Windows install there's a "Press F8" or something like that to tell it you want to specify drivers, then put in the disk with the drivers and it loads them and you can see the hard drive.

But if it's a Dell, they usually have all that stuff on the recovery CD's.

The CD says "Operating System" "reinstallation CD Windows CP Home Edition including service pack 1a" It is the CD that came with my computer.

In the windows setup screen I only have 3 options:
  • Enter - Continue to setup up windows xp
  • R - Run a repair
  • F3 - Exit
Hitting "enter" or "r" gets the same result of not detecting hard drives. I tried hitting F8 through various stages and it didn't do anything.

The other CD I have is the "drivers and utilites" and it says the contents are "device drivers, diagnostics and utilities, computer documentation." I did not get any floppy disks with my computer.

What kind of HD do you have? Is it a SATA or IDE drive. If it is a SATA drive you'll have to install the 3rd party raid drivers first when you put in the windows CD.

Can you fill us in on what you figured out.

It may help somone else who is having the same problem, and it helps knowing where people make mistakes so we can recognize the symptoms.

I know it is always easier for me to help people who have issues that I have already run into and figured out (which is a lot). Tech people usually only know the answers because they have already made the same mistakes (many times over).
