This morning the UCP has disabled the phone line to the Premier's office.
Now, if you were to be so bold as to call you will hear an automated message that says "Thank you for calling the office of the honourable Danielle Smith, Premier of Alberta.” and then it automatically hangs up on you.
Undemocratic coward.

Saint John woman owns rights to Alberta's 'Strong and Free' motto — if it appears on licence plate
---
The trademark, which was approved by the government in 2022, specifically names more than 200 items Dow's design might be made on, but can't without her permission. It lists everything from clothing, hats, lanterns, towels, hockey pucks, belts buckles and metal licence plates.
Lol

The ideal scenario, she said, would be to “negotiate an agreement” with Alberta for the province to use the trademark with a "nominal royalty,” some of which Dow said she would donate to a charity in Alberta.
Oh, oh Denise. I'm so sorry. That's not how this is going to go for you dealing with the UCP. They'll spend a butt-load of taxpayer money to have your trademark invalidated, then you'll lose everything.

I saw a clip of her saying something like “I’m sure they’ll do the right thing”, and that poor lady has no idea. One thing is certain: they will definitely not do the right thing.

Nenshi has been absolutely awesome the last 24 hours.
This is the difference between a party who needs to fight for every vote versus a party that knows they’ll win the next election because they carry the “conservative” brand.

Alberta’s use of the notwithstanding clause continues an alarming trend of provincial governments putting political expediency ahead of people’s human rights. We urge the Alberta government to turn the tide by removing the notwithstanding clause from its education bill and commit to only advancing legislation that complies with the Charter and upholds Albertans’ human rights.

Ya, I posted the interview with the Labour PHD professor and in that he mentioned that there is a strong chance that unions outside of Alberta may start reaching in to support the teachers and punch back.
No union in Canada will want to see this precedent be set that if the provincial government doesn't want to bother with negotiations that they can just slam the same offer into a union a couple of times and then NWC them into a 4 year contract that was rejected already, twice.
I am curious which path they pick. I think general strike makes sense but supporting the recall petitions may be the bigger move as they wouldn't just stand up to a government but actually topple a government that is malicious to unions.
Next up is the UPC pushing to change electoral boundaries so that there will be a lot of "urban/rural hybrid" ridings - i.e. gerrymandering boundaries to ensure they win the next election. I encourage everyone on this forum (well at least the sane democracy-supporting ones) to make a submission to the Electoral Boundaries Commission about this. https://abebc.ca/

Fortunately the committee just released it's recommendations, and they seem fairly reasonable. Hopefully this is what gets approved without any ####ery. The maps start at page 113.
Calgary-Okotoks is an interesting one, but I guess that whole area is going to be Calgary residential eventually anyway. It does not appear to count as one of the two new Calgary divisions, which are Calgary-Confluence and Calgary-Nose Creek.
Banff-Jasper is absolutely huge, but perhaps with Banff, Jasper and Canmore making up almost half the population it might have a chance to not go stupid.
I think the UCP are generally going to hate this. They don't get their Lethbridge butchery, Calgary gets two new ones and Edmonton gets one(Edmonton-South) that, while a large rural area, is probably still mostly populated by city folk in the north because there are no small towns in it.
Anyone else see anything interesting in there?

Thanks I hadn't seen that the recommendations were already released. Some things to quibble over but overall not as bad as it could have been. My riding (Calgary West) has a bunch of rural areas added to it but realistically is pretty much a UCP stronghold already.

It's almost as if we have a functioning, non-partisan, independent process for these types of reviews and not one that allows for gerrymandering like many people keep fear mongering about.

It hasn't stopped the UCP from trying, though. The concerns are valid, because as we have seen, someone sneezes in the wrong direction and this government will use the notwithstanding clause. You can see how normal rational people having faith in normal procedures in this province is at an all time low.

Exactly I have always had confidence in our democratic institutions and controls. However seeing them being systematically dismantled in the US and the UCP apparently thinking what is happening down there is a great idea has me worried about efforts to do the same here. That is why the use of the notwithstanding clause is the last straw for me.

The process hasn't stopped the UCP from trying because this is exactly what the process is built around. Members from all parties can make suggestions, share their thoughts and opinions, the public can do the same and subject matter experts can do the same. A committee reviews everything submitted and independently does what the determine to be the best approach.

These new maps are great. Biggest disparity is now about 39k smallest riding to just over 60k for biggest ridings. Before we were at 28k vs 82k, so some votes were worth roughly 3x more than others.
Banff-Jasper makes a lot of sense. It feels a little crazy that it stretches all the way to Grey Eagle casino, but it still makes sense (though that'll have to change again next time as the TAZA residential gets built out.
It'll be interesting to look closer at the tightest battlegrounds from last time to see if/how they've changed.
