First off, no, it can't. Not with Premiere Paper Ballot. But it would also disenfranchise a lot of people. And second, I'm not saying people should vote on the use of the clause(that'd be really bad), I'm saying people should have a chance to vote out the government that felt it necessary to use the clause. Just being able to use it, then have citizens potentially vote it down as the only consequence isn't a consequence at all.

My wife's a teacher. From what I hear from her conversations with colleagues, your wife won't be the only one retiring or quitting before the end of the year.
The problem the teachers went on strike for will become drastically worse before this "task force" has even been formed.

Good luck to the UCP on trying to hire 3,000 more teachers. I think you just lost one here.

Depends, if you want to teach private or charter, now is an excellent time for that.
Despite everything, I would still stay in public because I believe in equal opportunity. I might not stay in Alberta though.
But you also shouldn’t be made to feel bad if you want to teach in a private school, you’re still helping children. So it comes down to your personal convictions. Good luck.

I’ve been away from Alberta for a long time, but would like to understand how on earth Smith got elected?

Just got an email that our school's fun lunch program is canceled for now.
It's a small thing I realize, but this is the start of this stuff not happening. Kinda depressing (not blaming the teachers at all). It's one of those small things my daughter really looks forward to.

I think you misunderstood me.
I meant that the rules need to be changed in the year 2025 to not rely on something as silly as a paper ballot, and that if the government uses the notwithstanding clause (which is a check and balance against federal overreach), they need the populace to approve it.
IE if Smith uses the Notwithstanding clause yesterday, she should require 60% of Albertan residents to back her on it.
We need checks and balances but we need checks and balances on those checks and balances.

The PCs and the Wildrose merged and most legacy PC voters are slow to understand that the UCP is 99% Wildrose and only 1% PC.
They are waking up to a new reality now. I am curious how many actually learn and update their understanding as their heads are forced out of the sand.

It's incredibly tragic but this is going to be the result of this lovely government. More cancellations like this including sport, field trips, timely marking, fun lunches etc. I am having a really hard time rationalizing sending my kids to school under these circumstances and into this toxic environment to be honest. I don't begrudge teachers for stepping back on the volunteer side of the job at all either.
I've heard through the grape vine that dozens of teachers are already going through the motions and pulling the pin to retire early or leave the profession and go teach elsewhere after yesterday. This is only going to magnify the existing staffing issues as I would assume this number is far greater outside of my connections.

It's clearly not just a check on federal powers, because only the provinces have used it to restrict rights of their own citizens.
What you propose makes it easy for governments to test the waters often and would normalize it's use, because their is no consequence. My proposal has the consequence of an election as a trade off for the action, so you better be really sure you want to use it. The idea here is to make governments really think about it before doing it.
This way, they wouldn't have removed the rights of trans children without an election, and they would not have wanted to do that at the time. Albertans wouldn't have lost charter protected rights, which is the outcome we can all agree is correct, and why they wouldn't have taken it to an election.

Not possible, the UCP signs are blue. That's the only thing they can understand come election day

I know two teachers who were going to teach another year or two and are simply just calling it and putting in their resignations tomorrow.

If there are a fair number of teachers that end up resigning now rather than waiting, what ends up happening to the classes they teach? Would this end up going to the sub list to try to fill in for the year? Or would the classes have to be merged with other classes is a substitute can't be found?

- first they’ll look at the sub roster for temporary contracts
- then they’ll pull admin into classrooms
- or they’ll collapse classrooms and redistribute students to other classrooms

They clearly don't care about class sizes, so the UPCs will see it as cost savings.

Remember that because of the imposed agreement there needs to be 1000 new net teachers by the end of this school year (and the next, and the next).
